Let’s rehabilitate sardines

Sardines. Oily, bland Sunday supper fish on toast, smelly breath for the rest of the evening. No, no, no.

Times are tough, but you can still get a tin of sardines for 60p or so and with a little garlic and chilli it makes a splendid little spaghetti dish. Plenty of black pepper and olive oil to serve.

Let's not.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/06/2022 00:26

They don't need rehabilitating, they're nice with (not on) buttered toast. But in tomato sauce so they're not too oily. By all means have yours with chilli and garlic if you like, though I'm not exactly sure how that will improve your breath.Grin

I love sardines.

Fresh, charcoal grilled in a Portuguese or Spanish beach cafe for preference, but the Waitrose fillets in the pretty tins are excellent. The ones in olive oil and lemon.

Foxfeeder · 22/06/2022 00:37

Don’t do sardines but I do like a tin of mackerel fillets on bread or with pasta.

420Bruh · 22/06/2022 00:39

Stir fry with soy sauce, onion, peppers and chilli. Serve with rice.

MissingGrandstand · 22/06/2022 08:35

Lidl did a bag of frozen whole sardines for their Iberia week, £2.99 for a kilo. Iberia week neatly coincided with a bbq we were having and they were absolutely amazing, I still think about them!

Cleanup was not fun though

CosmopolitanPlease · 22/06/2022 09:08

I love sardines, they're healthy and delicious. Agree with a pp that the Waitrose ones in olive oil and lemon are the best. I eat them just on their own, yum.

Damn I want sardines now and I don't have any. Sad

shinynewapple22 · 22/06/2022 09:19

Good idea OP. We are always being told to eat oily fish and they are a cheap way to do it. Personally I like them on toast or on a sandwich (not in the office!) but also chuck into tomato based pasta sauce with black olives .

Someone , DH or a DS,has sardines every day in this house for lunch with toast.Delicious and nutritious . When they were at school it was also an occasional breakfast to ring the changes.

Oh fuck I want to, but I just can't! My mum force fed me Pilchards when I was a kid and I'm still haunted.

Fitterbyfifty · 22/06/2022 09:31

I love sardines. With spaghetti I prefer fresh though, still very cheap and very satisfying to gut!

ExtremelyDedicated · 22/06/2022 09:38

I have the ones in tomato sauce on toast for lunch at least once a week. Not keen on the oily ones though.

WakeUpandSmelltheKetchup · 22/06/2022 09:51

Love them! Easiest meal ever if hurry is to a tip of the olive oil based ones into some cooked spaghetti and stir but I am happy to eat them from the tin for lunch if running out the door to a meeting, griddle fresh ones and serve with lemon wedges and amazing bread, tomatoes, salad and white wine on lazy lunchtime.

So good, so cheap and don’t repeat on me unlike lots of other oily fish.

BestIsWest · 22/06/2022 10:02

Oh no, gutted. I was in A Waitrose yesterday and didn’t know about the nice ones. We’re 60 miles from the nearest one so it’ll be a while before I go back.
I’m happy just to have them on toast with butter though.

My mum used to take us out for lunch at John Lewis for a treat and I always chose sardines on toast! I don't think they do them a ymore though.

BobbinHood · 22/06/2022 11:22

The ones in tomato sauce on toast is still a favourite quick tea of mine.

Autumn101 · 22/06/2022 11:25

I love fresh sardines on the BBQ but my all time favourite is tinned ones mashed up with a huge amount of vinegar on buttered toast - hardly ever have them as they do stink but so so good

Prestissimo · 22/06/2022 11:25

Mix a tin of sardines in brine with a tub of cream cheese and a squeeze of lemon juice for easy sardine pate - delicious on buttered toast.

I really want some now...!!

thecurtainsofdestiny · 22/06/2022 11:28

@MissingGrandstand I just got these from Iceland. Haven't tried them yet but they look lovely!

Cornettoninja · 22/06/2022 11:29

That does sound lovely - one for when the rest of the house is empty! I love bbq sardines too.

I tend to be a mackerel eater, love a bit of peppered mackerel and the tinned stuff is good too.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/06/2022 12:09

I'm having a tin of Skippers for lunch - lightly smoked.
