What makes a good fruit salad?

Just made a big bowl of melon, strawbs, grapes and banana and it was underwhelming. Is there such a thing as fruit salad that is GREAT?

Made one today. I like a segmented grapefruit to give it sharpness. Plus melon, black grapes, nectarines.

As pps have said, I’d leave out the banana and add fresh orange juice. Mango is lovely but it does need to be properly ripe.

Take out the banana, the texture is all wrong. Pineapple is much better. Apples add a nice change of texture too.

Agree with that. Melon is pants too.

I hate it made with wine.

I love it when it includes banana (freshly cut so not mushy) and pineapple along with other fruits and, and loosened up with a bit of coconut milk.

Add in some orange juice as a liquid and leave it to rest a bit.

And no banana.

This.

With a bit of sugar added to the orange juice if you prefer it syrupy.

Green apples chopped up and drenched in lemon juice so they do not brown. Avoid anything that will go "soggy". So if making directly before serving raspberries or kiwis or melon are ok, if keeping any period of time, no. Stick to fresh pineapple, blueberries, blackberries, lychees seem to survive too. Strawberries, cherries. Mango maybe again depending on timeframe - you do not want this ti get "slimy" so if the salad will habe to survive more than an hour in the fridge then no. Grapes are fantastic!!

Pomegranite seeds also great, or crunchy fresh watermelon (again needs to be served very fresh). If you're going to keep it an hour or two before serving I'd avoid that type of stuff and stick to canned peaches/ pears, apples soaked in lemon/ lime juice, blueberries, grapes, pineapple etc, so none of it seems slightly off. Nothing worse than a "soggy" fruit salad.
