Which birthday cake for topper?

I need to bake or buy a birthday cake for my dd. I have an animal marzipan (?) cake topper that I would like to use in the theme of her party so am unsure what recipe is best to use. Could anyone recommend one please or a cake I can buy in the supermarket? Should I be sticking with marzipan icing or can it have any icing? Thanks

There aren’t any rules! Theoretically you can do anything, and tbh I think you should go with whatever flavour your dd likes best. If she’s not fussy, then go for a simple jam sponge with a fondant icing which compliments the colours in the animal topper. If you’re going to be serving the cake to a lot of children, avoid marzipan icing due to potential nut allergies.

Thank you very much @Fivemoreminutes1

You can stick it on with normal icing. If it’s a heavy topper you could always prop it up with a dowel. Stick a straw through the middle of the cake, cut to size, and then pop the topper on top (adding some icing in between so it sticks). That way it won’t sink.

Thanks so much both. And do either of you know whether chocolate icing is possible to dye blue (for a water theme as she loves ducks)? If not I'll perhaps stick with Victoria sponge and white icing which I can dye blue instead. Thanks again!

I would stick with white icing for the best blue. Or buy ready made blue. I had similar issues with trying to get a green for grass for my cow themed cake last year. Ready to roll was the best green.

I would also go for a Victoria sponge as it seemed good at supporting the weight of the cows. Or fruit cake for an older child, but no one likes fruit cake haha
