Best place to go for cake decorating ideas

There’s a few birthdays coming up in the family and I’d like to make decorated theme cakes. But it’s so hard to find websites with simple ideas/tutorials. Everything is either someone proudly showing off their creation on Pinterest or professional cakes to buy (usually from someone in a different country). I’m not nearly good enough to just wing it without instructions! Any ideas?

Ooh you need Jane Asher's Party Cakes book from the 1980s! I realise that's probably not massively helpful though!

My mum had something similar! I think it was the sainsburys book. All our birthday cakes were from it- I seem to remember a hedgehog and a castle. Maybe I should try the library.

Crumbs and Doilies or Cupcake Jemma (same person) on Youtube. Brilliant how to videos for lovely special cakes.

Literally hundreds of tutorials on YouTube. Just put in whichever theme followed by cake and you will find them. Zoe's Fancy Cakes or Cakes by Lynz are two of many great cake crafters on YouTube.

I have Debbie Brown cake books.
The recipes have every step and many are easy to make.

Pick a theme and go from there. I find there is endless tutorials on you tube for almost anything I fancy. Pinterest is good for ideas, then break down what they’ve done to achieve it and see if you think it’s doable.

I learnt a lot from YouTube tutorials and Instagram.

Instagram!

Ah thanks- looks like I’ll have to look at YouTube/instagram, neither of which I normally use. I have a bit of an aversion to instructions in video form but I’ll have to get over it!
