Cooking lentils

I’m going to try out a lentil, potato and pea curry (posted by someone on the veggie curry thread). I’ve never cooked lentils before as I thought they needed to be soaked overnight etc but this recipe just says to put them in at the same time as the potatoes and cook for 20 mins.

Does that sound right? Or is the recipe assuming I have soaked the lentils first? And advice for a lentil novice much appreciated.

Yes that sounds right and no you don’t have to soak them.

Red lentils cook to mush really quickly so no soaking needing.

Ah ok. Thanks both of you for speedy reply.

Put in a sieve & wash before cooking - they can be dusty.

Wash lentils thoroughly or they can give a bitter aftertaste. To cut down cooking time I soak mine in hot tap water for as long as possible before I cook them.

What sort of lentils? I find green rake around 45 mins
