Means something different again in Scotland, but you can make porridge from both of them. look here if your bored...

Porridge oats are oat grains rolled so that they are round and flat.

Oatmeal is oat grains that have been milled -resembles breadcrumbs or bran. You can buy fine milled or coarse oat meal.

I make porridge using oatmeal because I prefer it to porridge made with rolled oats, which I find a bit slimy. It takes a little longer as the meal needs to soak up milk/water. Also use oatmeal to coat fish instead of breadcrumbs, in HM burgers, in crumble topping etc.

good ole wilki! so the oatmeal used to make oatcakes would be ground, powdery oats? bum, can't get them here i think (singapore)

brimfull · 10/01/2008 01:24

in fact wtf am I still up discussing porridge oats for ,I'm off

night night

Granny22 · 10/01/2008 01:38

I have not gone to bed - I am just getting my game-boy ready for an all night session.

Egypt - if 'oatmeal is round and flat then it is porridge oats

ggirl - if your 'oatmeal' is round and flat it is also porridge oats and if you whizz it you will have very small porrige oats not oatmeal.

Sometimes proper oatmeal is sold alongside stuff for baking but usually it is beside cereals. Lidl do v. good and cheap oatmeal also the other supermarkets but maybe only in Scotland?

Forgot to add that eating oats in any form is supposed to be good for breast milk production and they are a wonderful skin softner with a handful in the bath.

Egypt · 10/01/2008 03:00

ahhh, well i had oats for breakfast and i am breastfeeding so my little one will be super nutrient filled now! enjoy hour gameboy session!
