Recipes for healthy baked beans?

Anyone got anything halfway decent that a 5 year old might take to? The canned ones are so full of shite I'm tempted to try something myself.....

watching this with interest - dd2 would live on baked beans given half a chance but I rarely buy them...

I do somewhere - hang on...

(this recipe has sausage and bacon in it but I leave those out)

finely chop onion and fry until soft and golden

add 400g tinned tomatoes, 2tsps brown sugar, 1 tsp mustard and heat until bubbling - turn down and leave to simmer for half hour without lid - stir every so often.

drain 450g of tinned pulses or precooked ones (I use 2 tins - kidney or haricot for 'real' baked beans) add and heat through

add chopped corriander if you like

mine love this - grated cheese and chunky bread. top stuff!

(loosely adapted from DK children's step by step cookbook - would recommend this book.)

Thanks BBBee, I'll give it a go, now just have to hunt out haricot beans!

heinz do organic baked beans which are less full of shite but obviously never as good as homemade

geekgirl · 07/01/2008 11:36

thanks BBee - will try that one out.

Furball, unfortunately they're full of salt - even the low salt versions contain more salt than a child's daily amount per can. Shocking that they can get away with putting so much salt into a food that's eaten mostly by children...
