Reusing pickled onion vinegar?

We've come to the end of the pickled onions I made for Christmas. I only normally make them at Christmas but want to have them all year round.

I have a lot of vinegar left from the Christmas ones. Can I reuse it? Or is it best to start from scratch again? It seems a shame to waste it. We already have a smaller jar in the condiments cupboard for putting on chips which will last us for ages.

Can I just chuck some more onions in and leave for a few weeks? Or empty the jar, sterilise it and then fill back up? Or should I just tip it away and put fresh vinegar in again?
