Healthy savoury snacks

hedwigismyowl · 16/01/2022 22:51

I'm trying to improve my diet and I much prefer savoury food to sweet food. Can you give me examples of healthy savoury snacks that I can just open and eat? Rather like chocolate but not sweet.

I do eat lots of fruit, salad and veg but want something different.

Thanks

Hummus and carrot sticks
Oatcakes with low fat cream cheese
Babybel
Low fat plain yoghurt or cottage cheese
Roasted chickpeas
Plain popcorn
Homemade veggie crisps

Hard boiled eggs (cook a batch)

Avocado with salt and a bit of chilli

Nuts - I love roasted unsalted peanuts, blanched almonds, macadamia nuts, cashews.

Cheese strings

I love hard boiled eggs in the summer I eat loads I’ll boil 12 they’ll be gone in two days.

Celery with good quality peanut butter (Whole Earth crunchy) or a small amount of Philly mixed with sweet chilli dipping sauce.

Apples with aforementioned peanut butter.

Mini packs of breadsticks are convenient and much healthier in terms of fat and salt content than crisps.
Also look out for Graze snacks like this.

If you like marmite they make rice cakes and biscuits with it in so you don't need to put anything on it. The rice cakes are amazing with butter but still good without.

On the rice cake front check out Kallo veg lentil cakes- I like the beetroot and balsamic, caramelised onion and pesto ones. Yes they’re processed but a delicious savoury snack that fits the ‘open the packet and it’s there criteria’. Low fat and protein based so more filling than crisps.

Not instant but with salads try ones you can make in advance and use different dressings. Google a Vietnamese rice noodle salad - best prepped in advance (just leave and lettuce or bean sprouts until just before serving, carrots and the noodles are best marinated) so all the flavours mellow.

I love falafel as a healthy filling snack. Sometimes I microwave it on cold days too

I like the little packs of oatcakes. Nairns snackers in the gluten free section are any favourites.

crispinglovershighkick · 17/01/2022 11:41

I like oatcakes but they all seem to be made with palm oil so I stopped buying them.

It depends on what you view as healthy but I like peanut butter and cheese on celery, Brazil nuts, Greek yogurt, boiled eggs. Low carbing since November so no apples for me but I used to eat apples with peanut butter.

There is nothing like Proper Nutty pb, I buy it by the massive tin now, it's amazing stuff (and no palm oil).

Salted popcorn, can even buy kernels and pop your own

housecoat1968 · 18/01/2022 16:58

I agree about the Kallo lentil cakes. The plain ones are good too with a bit if Flora Buttery on them.

Baked chickpeas are really nice, just season to your taste, (chilli powder/paprika/salt and pepper/garlic) spray with oil and bake.

pastabest · 18/01/2022 20:41

greek yoghurt with prunes and flax seeds
cubes of cheese (depends on what you believe is healthy - I feel cheese in moderation is healthy) with olives/ anchovies/ grapes
carrot sticks with various yoghurt based dips
hard boiled eggs sprinkled with salt and pepper and spring onions
strips of leftover chicken/ beef from main meals
cherry tomatoes

LoveFall · 18/01/2022 20:44

I like carrot sticks, cut so they have one side that is about 1/3 of an inch wide for dipping. I love to dip them in a spicy hot salsa.

hedwigismyowl · 19/01/2022 13:18

Thanks for these, I hadn't considered most of these as options. To clarify, I mean healthy as in not chocolate and crisps and sweet things. I prefer vegetables to fruit, so celery and mini bread sticks to dunk is a good call.

Make a batch of popcorn and use garlic salt over for savoury snack

Chop a batch of carrots and celery and keep in glass jars in water - make chickpea dip to go with carrots & celery

Roast Curly kale with seasoning of choice and eat as snack

Comedycook · 19/01/2022 13:26

Sun dried tomatoes
Olives

TofuDelights · 20/01/2022 23:44

Second the roasted chickpeas, also roasted kale which I do with spray oil and I don't think it needs anything else added at all! Really savoury and delicious.
