Can anyone help me work out how much buttercream icing to make? Recipe is using 2 tubs of Betty Crocker frosting, so enough to 2 x 8" round cakes. I'd prefer to make my own if I can so approximately how much do you think I'll need? Thanks.

Double icing sugar to butter - make sure you sift it and I add a spoon of milk to loosen

Each Betty Crocker tub is 450g so that's 900g of frosting. Buttercream is 1 parts butter to 2 parts icing sugar. So, to make 900g you will need 300g butter and 600g icing sugar :)

That sounds a heck of a lot of buttercream!!!

Thank you! And yes it does sound like a lot! I'm attempting a novelty cake so would much rather have too much than too little

You don’t always need that much sugar - I do more like 1.5x sugar to butter. I also add vanilla and a splash of milk. It does take a LOT to cover a cake - more than you think!
