That's it really!
Haven't used my slow cooker in years and only ever used one recipe which everyone has gone off.

Looking for some inspiration.....

Following as I always find everything tastes very similar when slow cooked and stinks the house out!

JustLikea · 09/01/2022 10:43

I use mine for gammon a lot and chicken stock where I throw in the bones and carcass and leave on low overnight

I made sausage casserole yesterday and it was actually delicious. I bought 2 packs of the extra special sausages for £4 out of Asda and I think that's what made it so nice. Added in a sliced onion, frozen sliced carrots and a sachet of sausage casserole mix and it was delicious. Had it with mash and Yorkshire puds. Oh I fried off the sausages first for colour and thickened at end with onion gravy granules.

That sounds fab!

A dead easy meal for us is a jar of curry sauce, chopped onion and some fake meat lumps (we use Tesco plant chef ones, honestly a lot better than they sound ). Leave it in slow cooker for 6 or 7 hours and it's so good, like a real treat. The same ingredients just done in the hob is decidedly mediocre. I've no experience cooking meat so cant advise on that but if it works the same then I highly recommend for a easy dinner!

I do chilli in the slow cooker and it’s delicious…

Half packet chopped frozen onions
Half pack chopped frozen peppers (obv can use fresh but I’m lazy!)
Large pack of beef mince
Whole jar of red jalapeños - juice and all! (Then fill jar with water and sling that in too)
Sprinkle of thyme
Sprinkle of chilli powder
Sprinkle of garlic powder
3/4 bovril/oxo cubes
Splash or Worcester sauce

All in slow cooker o low for 8 or high for 4 hours

Give it a stir, Chuck in a couple of cans of kidney beans and add a few gravy granules if it needs thickening up

Also nice for pulled pork

Put a Pork tenderloin (I cut visible fat off and remove the white stretchy bit, don’t know what it’s called!) and some chopped onions (frozen is fine) in slow cooker

In a jar mix enough Passata to cover with a few tbsp of balsamic vinegar, 1 tbsp Worcester sauce, sprinkle of mustard powder, tbsp each of smoked paprika and cayenne, salt and pepper.

Check and adjust seasoning to taste, you might need a bit of sugar.

Pour over pork and cook on high for 4 hours.

Remove pork and shred, add back in and serve. sauce can be thickened on the hob if needed depending on what you’re doing with the pork…

I have a couple of favourites.

Slow Cooker Goulash

Serves 4

Ingredients
500g pork shoulder cubes or stewing beef (If you want to make more you can increase this)
1 diced red chilli (if you like)
1 diced red pepper
2-3 cloves garlic
2 Onions diced
3 tablespoons paprika (a lot)
Hot Water
1 veg stock cube or marigold swiss bouillon powder
Carton single cream or UHT cream
Cornflour to thicken

Method
Put onions ,peppers, chilli, garlic and paprika into a large casserole dish. You can do this the night before.
Brown the meat all over in a frying pan. Add to the slow cooker along with the stock cube and pour over boiling water about 2L.
Cook on High for 30 minutes then turn down to low for 5 hours. Timing isn’t crucial, 6 or 7 hours is fine. Or if you want it quicker leave on high for longer than 30 minutes.
An hour before you want to eat, mix the cornflour with a little water and add to the dish along with the cream.
If it doesn’t seem thick enough add more cornflour mixture.
500G meat makes about four portions. If you want a load for the freezer you could use 1kilo.

Most things you normally cook, just reduce the liquid and adjust seasoning at the end,

@CatAlice what would you serve that with please? I'm vegetarian but live with a houseful of meat eaters and I think they'd like that!

You can do a big batch of chunky tomato soup v easily.

4 x tins of chopped or plum tomatoes
1/2 x tube tom puree
1 x Diced Onion
500ml x veg stock
1 x celery diced
2 x diced red bell peppers
1 x Garlic
1 x dash of basil
100ml x Cream
1/3 of a small block of Wensyldaale cheese chopped into small pieces or grated

Brown the onions first on the hob then chuck all other ingredients in and place on high in slow cooker for say 3 hours. Then use hand blender.

Can I ask a question re onions / peppers - do you brown them off first? I usually do but some of these recipes don’t call for it so wondering if it’s necessary or do they taste weird?

Chelsea26 · 11/01/2022 16:03

I don’t bother - I don’t think they taste weird. I would brown sausages (just because pale sausages freak me out) but nothing else

JuneFromBethesda · 11/01/2022 16:08

This is the one I use all the time. I substitute a bit of red wine for some of the water. So good.

I prefer the texture of peppers if they're sizzled a little first, and if I'm doing something with spices then I prefer to fry them off with something too. My slow cooker has an aluminium pan though so I tend to leave it on the heat/hob, adding to it as I chop to get a bit of colour. Thanks for the goulash recipe @CatAlice I look forward to trying it. Would probably serve with root mash. @MaMisled I'm trying to imagine eating that as it sounds hearty, is it like a casserole type dish or dryer?

Sorry no quantities as not near book but for general idea (quantities are largely to your personal taste anyway)

Cottage pie base…
Beef Mince
Chopped carrots
Chopped potatoes
Chopped celery
Chopped cabbage optional
Onion optional
Water
Stock cubes - I like kallo and use equal quantities of the veg, chicken and beef ones to taste
Throw some sweetcorn in quite near the end.
We like this quite soupy so don’t thicken, but you could, or just reduce it a bit with the lid off after.
…………………………………..
Chicken stew soup -
Chopped chicken
Chopped potatoes
Chopped carrots
Chopped celery
Cabbage
Water
Kallo stock cubes equal quantites as recipe above
I put one of each in to start then add more later if needed.
………..
Chicken pot roast -
Whole chicken or chicken joints, brown skin in the pot on the hob first, add chicken stock (previously made from boiling chicken bones with a little bit of vinegar)
Carrots
Onion
Peas
Water
Stock cubes
………….
I also do chilli con carne in the crockpot, to the exact Swartz packet recipe lol (almost), but it tastes soooo much better when you long slow cook it. I start it off in the crockpot pot on the hob (ours can do this check yours can) Drain the liquid the mince releases into a jug, keep it, use the juices as part of the ‘water’ quantity & just top up with water to the required amount. Before adding it in, put the seasoning pack into the dry mince & continue browning for another 5 mins, it will stick a bit on the bottom but all will deglaze when you add the liquids. It makes it sooo yum. I make a double quantity & freeze for easy grab meals.

Hungry now… off to raid the fridge 😁

What was your original recipe OP? Would love to know it. I’m sure you’ll all come back round to fancying it again in the future.

ElleL · 12/01/2022 04:15

Ahh, just remembered, for the start of the chicken stew soup, fry in the crockpot on the stove (if yours can do this) a diced carrot, and a diced celery stick, and onion , then add one tsp of dark molasses sugar & brown for 5ish minutes. The taste, and smell this adds is wonderful!
This is part of the stock base, then add your stock cubes, then add the water, then the other ingredients, more quantities of same but cooked in a different way tastes different. The first step is sooo worth it for the flavour.
It’s a good flavour base for lots of different things too xx

SuperSleepyBaby · 12/01/2022 04:27

Baked potatoes work out very well. I cover them in a small bit of olive oil. No meed to pierce holes in them

Also, a whole chicken and peeled carrots (not chopped) sitting on top. At the end you can put the chicken in the over for 10mims to brown the top

This is a firm favourite in our house. Butternut and lentil curry.
sweetpeasandsaffron.com/slow-cooker-butternut-squash-lentil-curry/
It’s really cheap to make too.
Love the slow cooked korma someone linked to above. Everyone loves that in our household.
We did Greek pulled chicken and honey and mustard chicken too which we’ve all gone off (eating less and less meat). Let me see if I can find the recipes
