Help!! Beef stock substitute in cottage pie!

I have just embarked on my cottage pie for the evening and realised I have no beef stock!! What can I use instead - chicken stock, veg stock, red wine/mix of all of them (I take it gravy granules would not be a good idea)

Red wine, have you got any Worcestershire sauce too?

DiamondSnow · 31/12/2021 18:14

Marmite with hot water

Yummypumpkin · 31/12/2021 18:15

Any of the above will be fine. It's just for flavour.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 31/12/2021 18:15

Gravy granules contain beef flavouring but they're a thickener so maybe not what you want - veg stock should be OK, they're mainly herbs and salt anyway?

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 31/12/2021 18:15

I put gravy granules in mine, thickens it up too. Also a splash of Worcester sauce.

Chicken stock and a bit of red wine will be absolutely fine. Or just chicken or veg stock. Don’t panic!

YourenutsmiLord · 31/12/2021 18:15

Drop of lea and perrins, bovril?, marmite?
Plus veg stock.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 31/12/2021 18:15

Good point by @DiamondSnow, or Bovril would be even better?

FindingMeno · 31/12/2021 18:15

Vegetable stock works very well.

MilduraS · 31/12/2021 18:16

I'd go with the chicken stock. Do you have any dried mushrooms? If so, I'd soak some in the stock and whizz it up in a blender. A teaspoon of marmite is good too.

Thank you!! I love MN Smile

I don't make mine with beef stock at all. I love bisto best (in the glass jar) and add a tablespoon or so of that. Sometimes a splash of worcestershire sauce and red wine too. I'm sure it will be delicious.

shinynewapple21 · 31/12/2021 18:21

Not chicken stock !

But veg stock , marmite , bovril, soy sauce . Worcester sauce ok . Yes to dried mushrooms , celery gives a good flavour , some tomato purée even or red wine or ale .

Dottyteapot · 31/12/2021 18:23

I would have used veg stock and a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

I only buy veg stock so use it in place of anything that needs stock Smile
