yes but not golden syrup or stuff like that. it's darker and it's more caramelly and tastes a bit 'burnt', iyswim.

so if I buy a tin of treacle tha will be ok?

Treacle should be fine, don't know of any other black syrup and the gingerbread I used to make used treacle.

yep. I think it says on the tin "black treacle" or maybe even "Black syrup" but tis definitely treacle that you want.

its the black and red version of golden syrup the green n gold one

Its called 'lyles black treacle' and its in a red tin with a dead lion on the front . Its the magic ingredient in gingerbread. Its also very good for you , full of iron.

the dead lion always makes me laugh - I know the story but who thought it was a good marketing tool?

I used to feed it to my horse when it was anemic and grew quite accustimed to carrots dipped in black treacle (weird I know but surprsingly nice) happy days

got the treacle - didn't notice the dead lion though - will have a look later. Now - to summon up energy to do baking with the DSs after taking them shopping

Cant remember where I heard it but someone convinced his sister the reason for the dead lion on the tin was because thats what golden syrup was made from , melted down dead lions . You can see why a kid would believe it ,its the same colour and everything.
