Jar or homemade chilli con carne?

If you use a jar which is best?

If you make from scratch, what are the ingredients you add?

Regardless of which approach you take, what else do you put in?

Garlic, mushrooms, onions, tomato, peppers, chilli pepper, - is that too much or am I missing anything obvious?

We have mushrooms in our chilli too. We have a bean mixture so not just kidney beans

I make my own chilli, using this recipe. It’s vegetarian but I imagine the idea would be the same with meat added to. The rehydrated and blended dried chillis give it a real body and richness. I don’t think mushrooms would be awful there if I had some to use up, but I’d chop them quite finely.

@trickytrudy

A shot of espresso, dark chocolate (sometimes with chilli), cinnamon, chipotle chilli flakes.
How much chocolate, is it grated in and at what point?

@androiduser probably before you add stock, usually about 1-2 squares. Just as they are as it'll melt.

@ancientgran

Chilli is easy to make from scratch, to the list of ingredients in previous posts I always add some chopped up celery. I love celery.
Oooh yes I like celery in it too

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon Celery is magic stuff, I love it.

I made chilli tonight as a result of this thread.

From scratch, delicious
