Homemade soup...what's your secret ingredient?

I'm on a mission towards zero food-waste in our house so am starting to explore the realm of homemade soup.
So far I'm planning to chuck leftover veg into a pan of water and boil until smushy. Then chuck in some other yummy ingredients (?) and blend...

Am I on the right lines? What other stuff do I put in to make it taste nice??

If you're roasting veg or are going to have the oven on for something else, roast extra veg for soup the next day. I made up a soup from roasted parsnip, butternut squash and celery today since last night's dinner included some roasted veg. I whizzed them up in the blender with veg stock, half tin butter beans for a little extra protein and a couple of tbsp greek yoghurt for creaminess. It turned out really well.

@buckeejit I love Mob kitchens kale and chorizo soup, lovely with a squeeze of lemon at the end Smile
