Canapés/nibbles that are both gluten free and vegan

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 01/12/2021 07:27

Looking for half a dozen Canapé/nibble ideas which are both vegan and GF, plus no mushrooms, celery or nuts.
Preferably that can be made ahead or minimal last minute assembly.

Will put out bowls of olives, crisps, veg crisps so actually maybe won't need as many as 6.

Thank you !

I'm in a similar position, planning a Christmas tea that caters for vegetarian and gluten free diets. I have pinned various recipes but haven't tried them. They include sweet potato rounds with various toppings, mini onion bhajis, cups made from shredded potato, courgette pizza bites and quinoa bites (you'd need vegan cheese for the last two). I'm also hoping that gluten free puff pastry is edible because that would make life easier.

Falafel
Hummus and veg sticks

MrsPleasant · 01/12/2021 07:51

Never made them but arancini could work if small enough.
Gf cracker or piece of gf Melba toast topped with Baba ganoush and pomegranate seeds
I love applewood smoked so would do cheese and pineapple on sticks
Can you get gf filo? If so Anjum Anand has a great pea and potato samosa recipe that I miniaturise.

Yes, individual dietary requirements are easy enough, it's the combination! Will check out some of your ideas @bluechameleon

@Ridingthegravytrain falafel are a good idea. We have hummus most weeks so maybe not for this occasion, but a good back up option.

Thanks both

The M&S Plant Kitchen potato salad and coleslaw are absolutely delicious even for non vegans if you wanted something like that instead of hummus.

Use cucumber slices as a base and add cherry tomatoes and a basil leaf, secure with a cocktail stick.

Chilled courgette and coriander soup in shot glasses.

Dried apricots soaked overnight give you a nice egg yolk sized space to stuff (normally I'd stuff with brie and wrap in bacon) you could add finely chopped veg, spring onion and capers might work and then bake for 10 mins.

Is this for Xmas?

Cut the top off a cherry tomato, add some vegan mozzerella and put the top back on to make a sort of mini santa - you can do the same with strawberries but I believe strawberries to be evil so they don't enter my house.

Cut a slice of water mellon into squares and add things on to a cocktail stick before putting it on the watermelon.

Individual gem lettuce leaves with a couple of sliced grapes and a drop of home made salad dressing.

Thinly slice courgettes, add a filling and roll up, secure with a cocktail stick, I'd normally do a mushroom stuffing but you obviously need an alternative.

Chats - deep fried baby potatoes.

Mashed potato rolled into balls, bread crumbed and deep fried

Rice balls

Mini fruit kebabs - cocktail sticks with a grape, a slice of banana, a slice of melon - you get the idea.

If you have some of those canape dishes, spoons, tiny pots you could do a tray bake of small pieces of onion and sliced peppers, put in a bowl with spices and olive oil to coat them first, then tray bake and put on tiny dishes with tiny fork.

Cubes of watermelon - about 3cm square - topped with a very thinly sliced piece of (Danish) Feta cheese & a small piece of mint leaf - held together with a toothpick.

Use vegan or dairy free cheese as an alternate if wished. But festive looking, refreshing to eat. And easy.

Greek salad boats. Use chicory leaves or baby gem. On a cocktail stick, skewer tomato, cucumber, olive, red onion and vegan feta. Drizzle with a Greek dressing.

You can buy vegan and gluten free pastry, so you could make vegan Vol au vents. Filled with spinach and a vegan ricotta.

Baked mini potatoes with fake creme fraiche and chives on top?
Segments of Clementine dipped in vegan chocolate? On a cocktail stick

EdgeOfTheSky · 01/12/2021 09:10

Dolmades

Those little veggie sushi rolls: nori seaweed, rice, cucumber/ avo or Japanese pickle centre.

Bimblybomeyelash · 01/12/2021 09:53

I’m making some like this, using gluten free crackers. And I’m going to attempt a similar beetroot topping too.

As a gf vegan, this thread is making me very hungry! Grin

idontlikealdi · 01/12/2021 12:40

I think I'd look at Indian recipies or Asian. Rice paper summer rolls and dipping sauce
Tikka vegan paneer bites
Lentil pakora - chickpea flour
Spiced quorn mince in lettuce boats

BruceAndNosh · 01/12/2021 12:44

I did Chili NON carne on bruschetta for our last drinks party (in 2019!)
Just swap out the bruschetta for a GF option

BruceAndNosh · 01/12/2021 12:47

Those cranberry bean balls sound delish!

TakeMe2Insanity · 01/12/2021 14:16

The gf jus rol will be your friend. Fairly sure it is vegan too.

Need to be more than 'fairly sure' - and that is the problem when you have to cater for multiple dietary requirements. Individually, no problem, and no real effort . Multiple and it becomes way more complex and a significant effort, but you want to hide that from your guests, whilst serving delicious food which satisfies those who aren't vegan/GF. And whilst trying to enjoy yourself at the same time. Not easy

Yes it is vegan and really tasty
FusionChefGeoff · 01/12/2021 20:18

Are you going to do anything for the poor sods who aren't vegan / gluten free?

WaltzingBetty · 01/12/2021 20:23

Chickpea blinis

Top with whatever

GF crackers
Potato wedges
Tortilla chips and dips
Sweet corn fritters

Well that was the objective of this thread - to find really tasty Canapés which won't leave the meat eaters missing meat. I am a carnivore but wouldn't miss meat/fish if the Canapés were tasty enough. There will be a full meal on the same day, when I will serve meat dishes as well as vegan. Which is why I am trying to do myself a favour and serves Canapés/ nibbles which everyone can eat to save prep time

Is there a reason they can't consume vegan foods?
