Freezing pesto

How do you freeze pesto? I normally just make enough for a meal or two but I would like to be able to make a big batch and then freeze it. Everything seems to say to cover it with a layer of oil... Do you then drain this off when defrosted? I'm worried the pesto will defrost dry or discoloured.

Does anybody successfully freeze homemade pesto and if so do you mind sharing your wisdom and tips!

I froze some a few years ago. I didn't cover with oil, but there was a fair bit in there anyway, with a lid on the container. It worked OK, although I didn't keep it for longer than about 3 months before using it.

I freeze it. I use very small pots with a screw-on lid, & don't cover with oil.

Thank you! Will just try freezing in small containers then and see how it defrosts
