Best instant coffee recommendations please!

I'm after buying something consumable for fil for Christmas. He wants nothing but drinks black instant coffee (& is currently on a mental restrictive diet so other normal things are out).

I don't drink coffee or would have maybe found out the best type by now but please let me know if there's any brands or types of instant coffee that you'd consider a big cut above Nescafé

Illy instant is the best by a country mile.

As someone who drinks instant coffee, I wouldn't unless you know he's willing to try different ones.

If you still want to get some I'd get a few smallish jars and make a little hamper.

I've tried loads, and I know you said not Nescafé, but Nescafé Azera Americano is very good

If he likes instant coffee don’t buy him any of the real coffee wannabes lime Illy. If you try to go a cut above Nescafé you’re into that territory. I dink instant coffee because I like it. I don’t like real coffee. It’s too rough for me. How about a nice mug?

I drink the Lidl or Aldi stuff that's about £1.40 a jar. I have it weak.
The Millicano-type ones are vile, like powdered coffee grounds.

If someone gave me some more upmarket instant, I'd probably keep it for emergencies.

I'd say it was he equivalent of buying someone who drank several cups a day of tea a day a selection of 'naice' teabags.

Nescafe Espresso

It's the only one I can stomach.

But I'd find it odd if someone bought me a jar as a gift tbh

My DH likes the Kenco blue label one but has had to start drinking decaf recently and found the Nescafé one really good.

Nescafe Alta Rica is really nice. Also M&S own brand instant coffee.

James Hoffmann (hosts a YouTube coffee channel) rated Little's Colombian instant coffee as the best supermarket instant coffee, but he also liked the Percol Columbian.

Another vote for Nescafe Alta Rica. Lovely rich flavour.
Also, like PP, not a fan of the powdered instants- always really watery and insipid!

Used to love Blend 37 (was it?) (Green label) and Alta Rica.
Not a patch on Millicano or Azera though.

Thanks all-will check them all out. He bought dh one of those bag calendar things but not sure if he's be bothered himself using a bag rather than instant!

Appreciate the idea of it potentially being unwanted though - I like my normal teabags but bough5 fancy Fortnum & Masons as a treat & most of them in the cupboard for emergencies!

I did but most people I know a jar of Lidl pickled onions when I discovered how good they were so he won't be confused!

I really like Lor but I use quite a bit, almost 2 tsps in a normal sized mug. I used to love the original Nescafé Gold Blend but then they improved it and made it awful. I've recently bought a Nescafé Roastery dark roast which taste a bit like a filter coffee, doesn't have weird burnt smell and is a good sub for the Lor. My dh loves Alta Rica but to me it smells weird. I'm a bit funny with my coffee.
