Shepherds Pie

Apols if I have mixed up cottage and shepherds pie!

I want to make a beef cottage pie with added lentils to make it go further. Would that be nice and which lentils?

Or would it be nicer to have a lentil one separately? I'll be doing them at the same time so I'd still save time.

I can imagine red kidney beans with beef would work, maybe with sweet potato topping. They aren't my favourite beans though, I wonder whether green lentils or black beans would be nice.

I’ve made a veggie one from Gousto, if I remember correctly it’s a tin of lentils. It’s very nice.

Lentils yes. Kidney beans no. Make a chilli with those.

I make cottage pie with half meat, half lentils and a tablespoon of Lea & Perrins. There's never any left over Smile

I love a vegan shepherd’s pie, with lentils and veg.

I use red lentils. If I had my way, I’d do roughly 50:50 but the dc (and dh) prefer about 70:30 mince to lentils. It’s much nicer when reheated the next rather than straight out of the oven for some reason.

I'd go with green or red lentils for this. I tend to do shepherds pie more often than cottage.

Cottage pie is made from beef and Shepherds pie made from lamb.

Green lentils from a can

Try pearl barley instead of lentils.

I always used to mix a 500g pack of minced beef with a drained tin of green lentils, then use half and freeze half for next time. Now that I have two ravenous teenagers in the house instead of cute little boys I have to use the whole shebang (!)

I made this one at the weekend (but used beef mince instead of lamb). It turned out well.
