What is your favourite cake?

I am planning on baking a cake this weekend for friends. Not much of a baker and don't really like cake, so would appreciate opinions and any tried and tested recipes please.

Cappuccino cake or chocolate Maltese cake are my go to cakes.

Carrot cake but only with cream cheese frosting, never icing.

Nigella's sour cream chocolate cake with a sour cream ganache is also splendid and fits the not icing bill.

I bake a fair bit to take into work and hands down this is the cake that gets raved about the most sallysbakingaddiction.com/best-pumpkin-cake/
It's quite similar to carrot cake but moist-er and a bit more flavoursome I think.

Lemon Drizzle or just a plain old Victoria Sponge would get my vote.

A simple Victoria sponge with fresh strawberries is my all time favourite. But for something more interesting I love:

Fruit cake without the glacé cherries. They are also probably the easiest to make.
A good chocolate cake is always welcome, but more effort

Nigellas chocolate fudge cake is nice.

It’s allegedly even nicer a few days after it’s been baked. But it doesn’t last long enough to find our here.

Carrot cake. The primrose bakery one is the best recipe I've found, it's really moist.

You cannot beat a good old chocolate cake. I also love a nice tasty fruitcake.

MrsJam -You can make a good chocolate cake just by replacing some flour with cocoa. It’s not that hard unless you want it to be.

You can fancy it up by grating lemon rind into it and on top. It is sooo easy to make

Well, if you are doing a Victoria sponge but using some cocoa, but I still feel the creaming the butter and sugar is more crucial and the egg might curdle and then it is just a bit basic unless you at least put chocolate butter cream in the middle, isn’t it.
Actually, it is making me feel very nostalgic thinking about this type of chocolate cake. I suppose it is just what you make most often seems easier. Someone is bound to say the fruit might drop in a fruit cake.

Actually, a whisked sponge with cocoa in is very quick, and delicious with cream and damson jam in it and melted chocolate and cream to cover it.
I also like chocolate Victoria sponge with marmalade in the middle and chocolate on top.

Lemon drizzle, or even better a citrus drizzle: mix of orange and lemon juice and peel. I also love a carrot cake but I think they are more divisive, so would only take that to an event if I knew people already liked it, or if I was bringing a second option too
