Is there any point in a slow cooker if you don't eat much red meat?

absolutely!

i cook entire chickens in mine and plenty of veggie dishes, too.

I make a sausage and lentil casserole which is much nicer done in the slow cooker. I think they are good for casseroles/stews mainly so I suppose it depends on how often you eat that sort of thing...

we really like eating stews, the most red meat we eat atm is bacon/chorizo/sausage in a stwe, so could be good. Entire chickens? Sounds great. Presumably they don't have 'roasted' style skins???

is there a good cook book you would recommend?

Expat, do you please have any veggie recipes that you do in a slow cooker? I'm hoping to get one for Crimble but other than veggie curry and veggie sausage casserole, I'm not really sure what I could cook in it.

I am curently making a Lentil and veg stew using my slow cooker. I find it very useful (I am veggie) as I can prepare the veg etc. at a convenient time and just leave it to cook while I get on with whatever I need to and not worry about pots burning on stove etc.

My stew is 3 carrots, 3 leeks, 1 red onion, 2 cloves garlic, grated ginger, small celeriac chopped, and red lentils plus stock and marmite. Easy peasy lemon squeezy

bigmyrrhstrikesagain · 12/12/2007 16:52

ooh forgot also 3 sticks celery.

paulaplumpbottom · 12/12/2007 16:54

All sorts of casseroles can be done. Its very useful

Thanks BigMyrrh - a veggie recipe worthy of the great Moz himself, methinks!

Also great for cooking big batches of beans. Or you could just open a tin of Heinz, I suppose!
