I stopped eating the real thing about 15 years ago because it's such a vile practice. But I do miss the taste.

There is a duck version available all year round but the goose version is available now...

[adds to shopping list]

will let you know

What is it? is it a pate? sounds interesting.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 05/12/2007 21:17

rosybud - yes it's a version of Pate de foie gras, the goose pate.

The faux gras is made in Norfolk where they let the geese naturally stuff themselves stupid - apparently the geese eat loads at this time of year to prepare for their migratory flights (hence why it's only available now). The excess weight causes their livers to swell but only by 2.5 times, not the 8+ times that is achieved by force-feeding.

[duck version is now in fridge destined for tomorrow's supper - goose one should be in 'by next weekend' according to yoof on butchery counter]

MerryAnnSinglemas · 06/12/2007 18:12

no, but worth buying just for it's name !

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/12/2007 22:08

I almost hope it's rubbish - as I am 4mths pregnant I am somewhat torturing myself with all this talk of pate!

reporting back:

it's as good as or better than average foie gras pate
but not as good as good whole-liver fois gras

worth a teaspoon on toast even if pg

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/12/2007 19:22

Thanks MrsB. I think I might try a teeny bit, it is Christmas...!

Frankly if you eat factory reared chicken or/and pork yet baulk at foie gras you are extremely hypocritical though.

I'd rather be a fat goose waddling about and being stuffed to the gills than a debeaked chicken with burnt claws, scrabbling for room to stand.

Swedes2Turnips1 · 07/12/2007 19:40

Moondog, do you prowl the threads looking for environmental transgressions?

MrsBadger · 07/12/2007 21:24

tis not on ocado, you have to go in person

is in the Christmas special fridge cabinet

(free range chicken only chez Badge, moony)

CloudAtlas · 07/12/2007 21:58

and I only do organic!!
Thanks MrsBadger

I looked at it yesterday, it looks vile, just like liver sausage. Give me the real thing anyday
