Best birthday cake for breakfast

On DH’s birthday this year, we’re only going to be together at breakfast (7am) due to work.

I’d like to make him a birthday cake but think anything too sweet will be a bit unpleasant so early in the day. So far have thought of a baked cheesecake, as I reckon that’s not too sickly and we could have fruit with it. But I wondered whether anyone had a better idea? It needs to be doable the day before as I don’t fancy getting up at 4am to bake Grin

Breakfast cheesecake is a thing - I’ve been meaning to try this for ages as it sounds delicious…

Or how about a banana cake of some sort?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/09/2021 23:43

Carrot cake with or without the frosting with apricot compote is lovely.

Or lemon drizzle cake with soft fruits and yoghurt.

Banana bread as @LadySybilPussPolham also very breakfast like.

I used to make Weetabix loaf and All-bran cake which are very 'cerealy' but more like a tea-loaf than a cakey cake

Pancake stack?

ItsDinah · 18/09/2021 02:13

Apple cake.

^^

Crêpe cake?

violetbunny · 18/09/2021 02:31

Cheesecake can be quite rich. I'd go for some kind of sponge cake with fruit. Or perhaps birthday waffles instead of cake?

lannistunut · 18/09/2021 02:33

I also think banana cake, or some form of American muffin.

Kanaloa · 18/09/2021 02:46

Have you seen those Japanese fluffy pancakes? I saw a picture online and they look divine.

Not technically a cake I know.

Brian9600 · 18/09/2021 07:18

Thank you, everyone.

Those fluffy pancakes look amazing but I think I’ll save them for a day when I’ve got a bit more time- I don’t fancy my chances of not screwing them up if I’m rushing.

Banana and carrot cakes both vg ideas. Or Apple. Hmm, shall have a think.

Although pancake stacks fit the brief exactly, I find them a bit slimy. But definitely a good birthday and breakfast combination!

Thank you again x

Light sponge with fruit

SheWoreYellow · 18/09/2021 07:36

Apple cake with cinnamon would be lovely, I think.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 18/09/2021 07:38

Pound cake?

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 18/09/2021 07:41

River Cottage recipes, like the one @LadySybilPussPolham linked, are always excellent!

AwkwardSquad · 18/09/2021 07:44

I vote apple cake. You could try Felicity Cloake’s Perfect Dorset Apple Cake recipe, it’s lovely (although I don’t bother with the sugar topping): www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2016/oct/13/how-to-cook-the-perfect-dorset-apple-cake?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Someonehelpmeplease · 18/09/2021 07:47

I’d make cinnamon rolls.

You can have them ready to bake, and leave them to prove in the fridge overnight. When you wake up in the morning, take them out of the fridge and preheat the oven. Then they can bake while you get ready for the day.

You can also pre-make frosting and have that sitting in the fridge too, ready to use in the morning.

Yoghurt cake. I don't have a recipe to hand but if you Google you should find one where you tip in the yoghurt then use the pot to measure the other ingredients. I think the yoghurt makes it not taste too sweet.

raaaasss · 18/09/2021 08:03

Just like this but I'd use a pot of fruit flavoured yoghurt instead of berries.

I am also in the cinnamon bun camp. Made evening before, cooked fresh. Utterly divine.

Another vote for Dorset Apple cake.

FrankGrillosFloof · 18/09/2021 08:08

Now wishing I had cake for breakfast

Crocky · 18/09/2021 08:18

Proper birthday cake with icing and decorations is absolutely the perfect breakfast food on a birthday morning and for the next couple of days until it’s gone 😄 same rule as chocolate on Christmas morning.

RampantIvy · 18/09/2021 08:22

Sorry, but it isn't for me @Crocky.

sandgrown · 18/09/2021 08:25

I went to visit my brother who was working in Uzbekistan. It seemed normal to have full on brightly coloured cream covered cakes for breakfast so go wild !

Crackery · 18/09/2021 08:27

On such occasions for dc I've made a giant crispy/cornflake cake in a cake tin.

Stewed Apple ready for a side dish does well to cut the sweetness
