Freezing salmon on use by date

We have some vacuum packed salmon with a use by date of today. I've just shoved them in the freezer. I wanted them for tomorrow but just noticed the date. How does it work with defrosting? Surely they will be no good as out of date in with 2 hours to go to midnight and the next day

There isn’t a magic switch a midnight that means it’s off

It will be fine. Is easy to tell when fish is bad- if it doesn’t smell, defrost and cook as you would.

EwwSprouts · 30/08/2021 22:03

Agree it will be fine. I often cook in the oven straight from the freezer, dash of olive oil sprinkle with herbs & wrap in foil.
Or you could defrost in the fridge.

Zarene · 30/08/2021 22:04

I'm sure it will be fine, but if you're worried just give it a sniff before you cook - if it smells fine it is fine.

It will defrost quite quickly in cold water, so you shouldn't technically go over the date at all.

Oddbutnotodd · 30/08/2021 22:06

It will be fine and would have been without freezing it overnight.
So much food is wasted unnecessarily because people don’t use their common sense.

We always cook salmon from frozen.

KittenKong · 30/08/2021 22:40

They should be fine - when it goes off you don’t ‘think’ it’s off, you can really smell it. I haven’t poisoned anyone yet.

How long does it take to cook from frozen? It's in the freezer and I wanted it for dinner tomorrow.

The pack does say not suitable to cook from frozen

If it's already in individual portions check after 20 mins. I always wrap loosely in foil.

carrottopper · 31/08/2021 21:21

Thanks. Why would it say not suitable for cooking from frozen?!

Who knows? This says cook it any way from frozen except pan fry.

Why did you bother freezing them if you're going to use them tomorrow, probably only 12 hours past the date on it? When obviously it'd still be fine to eat anyway.

@carrottopper

Thanks. Why would it say not suitable for cooking from frozen?!
It may have been frozen at some point already.
