Currently dieting and obsessing over pickles. What's everyone favourites?

home-made pickled red onions, method stolen from Nigella
halve a red onion, then slice into thin half-moon strips. cover in red wine vinegar. She says a couple of hours, but my extensive research says two days is best.

Homemade every time, but preferably if someone else makes them so it's their house that gets stinked up with vinegar.

I like M&S spiced pickled onions, and Baxter's beetroot. I only like properly tangy pickles that 'mek yer tabs laff', not the pointless sweet things Grin

I once had some baby onions in balsamic vinegar but can't remember the make, they were delicious.

These red pepper pearls are amazing. I’m not sure they are actually pickled they are not n getting that kind of section.
M&S do a jar of pickled red onions but the pickling vinegar has chillis in so they have a bit of a kick.

BrilliantBetty · 24/08/2021 19:11

Oo yummy

Imtoooldforallthis · 24/08/2021 19:16

I've tried those red pepper pearls and I wasn't keen.

Waitrose do balsamic pickled onions! Delish

PenelopePrat · 25/08/2021 08:43

I often make a jar of the Nigella onions mentioned up thread. I use lemon or lime juice too and sometimes some dried herbs.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/08/2021 09:17

Garners onions, shallots and red cabbage are all.amazing.

I've been doing red onions in either lime juice or red wine for years (The latter as a basis for a Greek salad).

Old fashioned cucumber in vinegar, in a baguette with cream cheese.

Stokes chilli jam - The dog's bollocks of chutney type things.

I had these recently, really nice. Bit pricey though!

Does anyone remember the mixed pickle that used to be in yellow vinegar? None of these vagrant red peppers hate crashing the party, just powerful amazing pickles

You can’t get them anymore, and it’s so disappointing

My dds friend is polish and her dm bought me back some home made gherkins she pickled in Poland with her dm. I think they were done in water not vinegar and they're the nicest gherkins I've ever had. She told me I they're really hard to find over here even in the Polish shops, usually they only sell the vinegar version. If anyone else has heard of them or knows how to make them please tell me!

Kwackerly · 26/08/2021 21:54

Morrisons own brand gherkins are by far the best. Ready crunchy and addictive.

Pink pickled onion with lime & bay - James Wong recipe - Devine!

3 red onions - thinly sliced
100ml ACV
1tbsp honey (or omit or swap for sugar)
Half tsp salt
1 (small) lime thinly sliced
2 bay leaves

Mix all ingredients together in glass bowl and leave to infuse overnight (if you can resist!) - then store in sterilised jar in fridge for up to 3 months (or a week in our house!).

Highly recommend all the recipes in Mr W’s book (‘how to eat better’)!

Enjoy!

Also good - M&S red onions pickled

MerryMarigold · 26/08/2021 22:04

Lidl do loads. The best are the picked cornichons. Small, crunchy, delicious. (Ds1 days they look like slugs though).

dizzylizzy08 · 26/08/2021 22:10

I didn't try a pickled egg until I was 37. I sometimes get upset at all the years I wasted not eating them.
I'll eat pickled anything. I'll put vinegar on anything. I sometimes wonder if there's something wrong with me. My mouth is watering now just thinking about Garners.
I'm in France though. They don't know what they're doing here on the pickle front. They're good at cake though. Fair play. I think cake is the only thing I wouldn't want pickled.

dizzylizzy08 · 26/08/2021 22:12

Oooh! What about those Italian ones? They're pickled and sweet. I wish I had a dish right now. I'm flobbergobbing all over the place here! Damn you, OP! ;-)

PepperPepperMan · 26/08/2021 22:19

Hang on, pickled anything with what else to diet?
