Picky dinners

Thinking of doing a few picky dinners this week as they children seem to eat better this way, so just wondering what kind of things others include in a picky dinner.

An example of what I mean, the other day we had Quiche, salad bits, bread, salami, mozzarella and olives

Basically looking for new ideas of what to include

Soup and sandwhiches
Toasted sandwiches
Make your own frittata or omelette
Enough stuff to make your own baguette, roast a joint and let them build their own.
Homemade pizza
Cold meats, pickles, dips and dippy things
Freezer surprise

Pasta salad, vegetable sticks, hummus, fish goujons, quonia, jacket potato halves...not all together.

DellaPorter · 25/07/2021 22:18

Cocktail sausages
Mini sausage rolls
Home made potato wedges
Microwave vegetable rice
Corn on the cob
Cubes of cheese
Hard boiled egg quarters
Grated carrot

Picky dinner?

Is that a buffet?

Quesadillas - Wraps sandwiched together with grated cheese and refried beans, toasted in frying pan

TiredButDancing · 25/07/2021 22:20

I think it does depend on what they will eat. DD is a bit fussy but, for example, will eat a sort of picky dinner in the form some chicken, some vegetables (served individually eg a broccoli spear, a carrot or two, some baby corn, a potato). But she would never eat those things all mixed up together n any form. Would they do similar?

What about cocktail sausages, tomatoes/peppers/cucumber with baby potatoes/wraps/pita breads?

Babybel, ham, fruit chunks with carb of choice?

ElizaDoolots · 25/07/2021 22:25

Quesadillas go down very well here.
Also falafel and hummus with breadstick/veggie sticks to dip
Tortilla is another good one (I do one with broccoli, new potatoes and ricotta)

Is a picky dinner Like a mezze ?

Is a picky dinner Like a mezze ?
Nah, more like a, can't be arsed so take your pick from fridge, freezer or cupboards. A mezze is so much more effort.
furstivetreats · 26/07/2021 06:54

Whole cooked baby potatoes, u roast in their skins in a bit of oil and keep in the fridge. Nice on their own or used in omelette, curry, fried up with herbs etc.

Bbq corn on the cob, slice the kernels off and again keep in fridge. Bbq onions and peppers at the same time.

Homemade coleslaw

PluggingAway · 26/07/2021 06:55

I was going to suggest a mezze Blush

You could buy everything pre made to make it easy?

Imtoooldforallthis · 26/07/2021 10:24

Whole roast chicken, mixed salad bowl, nice tomatoes, peppers, nice bread. Coleslaw, mini roast potatoes.

Is a picky dinner only eaten with fingers?
Can it be hot food as well as cold?

Not trying to be awkward it’s just not a phrase I use.

How do you normally serve meals? Do you plate up or lay the food on the table for people to help themselves? I do the latter and do think kids eat better like this. I guess they feel they have more control.

Nonmaquillee · 26/07/2021 13:40

Tapas??

QuinceTamarillo · 26/07/2021 23:39

A lot of this may already be included in "salad bits", but:

blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries
sliced/diced (raw) peaches, pears, plums, pluots, nectarines, bananas
citrus segments: orange, grapefruit, tangerine, clementine, etc.
walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts
baby carrots
radishes
cherry tomatos
broccoli and cauliflower florettes
peeled hard-boiled eggs
hummus and/or baba ghanoush
tzatziki
ajvar, chutney, relish, salsa
vegetable chips/crisps
rice crackers, flat pretzels, water crackers, pita triangles
spiced popcorn
cubed/sliced cheese
sliced baguette
grilled or pickled vegetables

Soup in small portions (like in a teacup or small glass) - a chilled soup at this time of year, like gazpacho, ajo blanco, spiced carrot, borscht, etc.

I've found that putting everything in the middle and letting them serve themselves serves the same function as a picky dinner and generally results in better eating if you get bored of actual picky dinners/want more variety.

I love a picky dinner.

accentdusoleil · 28/07/2021 14:55

Is it serve yourself ?

Anoisagusaris · 28/07/2021 15:20

I thought you meant dinner for a picky (i.e. fussy) eater!
