Non-sweet soft drinks

StiffyByng · 19/07/2021 17:35

Please help me, as I'm drinking too much because of lack of inspiration. Grin

I have virtually no sweet tooth for drinks. I can cope with bitter lemon but find the taste of sweetener a bit grim. I like lime and soda. I drink almost entirely fizzy water as there's so little else out there, and now I'm drinking cold white wine out of boredom.

I love, love citron presse in France, when I can add tiny amounts of sugar. I've occasionally found lovely non-sweet lemon cordials (for £££s) which then get discontinued.

Any suggestions for cordials/soft drinks I've missed that aren't sweet? I don't like non-alcoholic wine but occasionally have the beers. Not really my go-to though.

Agree with all the love for the non-sweetened sparkling waters but occasionally I get caught out with one with added sweeteners.

Reliable: Aqua Libra, Le Joli, Dash, Ugly Water, Loveau, San Pellegrino Essenza

Highland Springs Pear & Elderflower is no good, it has pear juice or something added. Same for any of the mainstream fruit flavoured stuff from evian or own-brand ranges.

There are so many more of these non-sweetened flavoured seltzers in the US by the way - LaCroix, Poland Springs, Bubly - that I hope more brands will be coming in our direction.

soooooooG · 20/07/2021 15:13

Kombucha? I can't remember the brand but theirs an Apple cider vinegar one that's lovely.

I also love ACV in water. Gives it a zing!

CarnationCat · 20/07/2021 15:19

I love cranberry and tonic.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/07/2021 15:26

I use a wee dash of the Monin syrups in Violet and Rose flavours to add a little something to my glasses of fizzy water. I'm also partial to the watermelon and green apple flavours, but the florals are my standards

idril · 20/07/2021 15:27

I second Dash water. I also hate sweet fizzy drinks but these are nice. If anything they don't have enough taste (my husband who likes fizzy drinks thinks they are tasteless) but the taste they do have is very natural and not at all artificial.

Palavah · 20/07/2021 15:29

Squeeze half a lemon or lime into your still/sparkling water, or put cucumber/raspberries/mint /whatever into your water bottle or jug.

I have been known to use jif lemon or supermarket own brand lemon juice for convenience.

FogHornInTheAttic · 20/07/2021 15:35

Tonic water and lime juice

FizziWater · 20/07/2021 15:38

I have a soda stream which is the best thing ever. I add a dash of elderflower cordial or pomegranate juice.

BIWI · 20/07/2021 15:38

Sainsbury's sell PLJ

How about some fresh grapefruit juice, topped up with tonic or sparkling water? Probably about 1/5 fruit juice to 4/5 tonic/water?

AppleBarrel · 20/07/2021 15:38

I drink mainly lime and soda too - following this thread for tips!

M&S do an excellent lemon and ginger still unsweetened water.

They also do a cucumber one, but I haven't tried that.

I haven't seen any unsweetened sparkling flavoured water, but our local m&s is quite small.

Cawston press do sparkling canned drinks with no added sugar or sweeteners - they are fruit juice based though, so do have some sweetness to them.

Apple juice 50/50 with sparkling water is very popular in Germany and you can adjust the strength to taste.

StiffyByng · 20/07/2021 15:45

Wow, loads of ideas. Thank you very much.

No Sainsburys near me unfortunately. But I should be able to track down quite a few of these suggestions.

fresh mint leaves in fizzy water is lovely

StiffyByng · 20/07/2021 16:07

I'm not keen on mint, or florals. So often my only choice when going out is elderflower, which makes me feel sick!

It takes me back to childhood, when the only option was usually orange squash and I used to hope desperately for lemon to appear.

I'm drinking lemon juice with a little sugar currently (bottled lemon)

BIWI · 20/07/2021 16:22

You can buy plj on Amazon. If you have Prime, it's free delivery.

Lunaballoon · 20/07/2021 18:31

I like Cawston Press rhubarb. It’s slightly tart, no sweetners and not artificial tasting.

SunSeaSurfGin · 20/07/2021 18:44

We get through a lot of this mint & scullion lemon pressé in Casa Sun from Tesco

Belvoir ginger cordial with sparkling water. Use sparingly.
Any of the Rocks range of squashes. I like lemon.
Watered down fruit juice.
I also hate sweeteners.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 20/07/2021 19:35

Belvoir do a tasty gin replacement with cucumber and juniper flavours, but my favourite is Sainsbury's finest Mexican lime and ginger cordial, which is not too sweet and tastes fresh. Bottlegreen's lemongrass and ginger is good, too, as is San Pellegrino Pomelo (grapefruitish)

sylbunny · 20/07/2021 20:09

@KirstenBlest

Angastura bitters, lime and soda This. Bitters aren't non-alcoholic.

You could try vinegar shrubs.

I'm another who isn't keen on sweet soft drinks or artificial sweetener.
Water is ok. Some squashes and cordials are ok.

No but you only put a few drops in so when it's diluted it's negligible
KirstenBlest · 20/07/2021 20:19

True @sylbunny, but might be an issue if someone can't have any alcohol.

Olliphant · 20/07/2021 20:21

Have you tried ugly cans of fizzy water with just a hint of flavour? No added anything.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 20/07/2021 21:22

I've just started making lemon and honey mixed with san Pellegrino. It's lovely and refreshing and doesn't need the honey inside it

FlosCampi · 20/07/2021 21:28

Jamaican ginger beer but add more ginger and lemon, cloudy lemonade with extra lemons squeezed into it, bitter orange...I share your taste!
