What do you serve with steak?

I’m trying to write myself a 2-week meal plan so that I can free myself from the constant need to think about what we are going to eat for dinner each week. We are also dieting and so I want to work out calories for our meals in advance.

My skeleton plan is as follows:

Steak
Chicken
Fish
Oily fish
Eggs
Plant based
One meal out/treat meal.

I have multiple go-to recipes for each protein source so can do different on week 1 and week 2, but I’m completely at a loss as to what to serve with my steak. I don’t want to do chips and feel otherwise completely uninspired.

So what do you serve with your steak?

The OP says she is dieting, so people post some pretty calorific suggestions Confused

Foobydoo · 15/07/2021 10:00

Week one I would do steak with a large salad of mixed baby leaves, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, radish, red onion and peppers and cress with a slightly soft hard boiled egg sliced in half, you could add new potatoes if not watching carbs.

Week two I would do steak with roasted cherry tomatoes on the vine, mushrooms and purple sprouting brocoli or asparagus.

Grilled mushrooms and salad and roasted tomatoes (if dieting)

New potatoes (you could slice and roast in chicken stock) that would be lower calorie

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/07/2021 10:07

Roasted gnocchi with a blue cheese sauce ... bit calorific though!

Zooxanthellae · 15/07/2021 10:10

Stir fry veg, bare naked noodles, garlic butter. All in about 530cals

Covetthee · 15/07/2021 10:11

Salad, broccoli, and if you have access to aldi their mighty peas go lovely with steak! I believe m&s does it too but not sure on the price

Any veg goes well with steak really.

TooMinty · 15/07/2021 10:14

I usually do sweet potato wedges and garlic mushrooms (not healthy as I put butter and creme fraiche on them) and maybe also roasted asparagus or tender stem broccoli.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 15/07/2021 10:19

You could have it as is, cut into strips, cooked with soy and mirin/sake, gochuchang optional, with rice and edamame, tossed in spices, with a spicy sauce, with a pepper or garlic sauce, with green pepper strips and noodles...the possibilities are endless.

cervixuser · 15/07/2021 10:26

some sort of salad or green beans or tenderstem broccoli

OhRene · 15/07/2021 10:26

I always serve mine with boiled new potatoes and a nice salad. I'll sometimes do a nice peppercorn sauce when I'm in the mood.

Marmite27 · 15/07/2021 10:28

Last time we had it, I had a loaded jacket potatoe (with 3 cheese sandwich filler), broccoli and green beans.

DH had jacket wedges.

TheAwfuITruth · 15/07/2021 10:30

I have truffle chips and blue cheese sauce, not that it helps you here Grin

I'd maybe do a green salad, with some roasted cherry tomatoes

Anniissa · 15/07/2021 10:32

Seared and sliced over an Asian noodle salad or slaw or drizzled with chimichurri sauce with avocado and corn salsa or with a creamy garlic mushroom sauce made with a bit of low fat creme fraiche with new potatoes and rocket, sliced over bibimbap?

sashh · 15/07/2021 10:36

Mushrooms and onion rings.

Mini crushed roast potatoes.

New potatoes - boil for 10 mins (you can do this ahead) when the potatoes are cooked get a fork and partially crush them.

15 mins before you eat heat oil in the oven and add the potatoes, you can add honey, herbs, salt and pepper for a change.

Easy sauce for anything - melt cream cheese in a hot pan with a tablespoon of water.

You can add to this, so sliced and fried mushrooms, then add the cream cheese.

If you are frying the steak, remove it to rest, add a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and cream, warm through and pour over your steak.

Salad goes well with steak.

I've just reread and noticed you are dieting so maybe a baked potato and salad - but make / buy a nice dressing.

You can also pour 1/2 glass of red wine into the pan you have used to cook the steak.

A mix of root veg mashed together.

Potato Rosti.

Chips but made with sweet potato, parsnips or carrots.

FizzyPink · 15/07/2021 10:41

I use it to make a salad with peppers, courgette and halloumi and marinate the steak in a bit of wasabi before cooking to give it a bit of a kick

hashbrownsandwich · 15/07/2021 10:47

If you're dieting I would say air-fried homecut chips, watercress salad and roasted tomatoes.

bongbigboobingbongbing · 15/07/2021 11:37

If you're low carbing, roasted or mashed cauliflower is good with steak. Personally I do a watercress salad and roasted cherry tomatoes.

MountainDweller · 15/07/2021 14:08

I cut potatoes or sweet potatoes (or both) into 1.5cm squares and coat with olive oil, paprika, salt and pepper. Bake at 180 fan for 25-30 mins till crispy on the outside. I call them 'square wedges' because they taste like wedges but the edges don't burn! If you don't have loads they're not very calorific. Then I'd add roasted tomatoes, mushrooms and maybe peas.

Or if i wanted the steak to go further, some kind of salad with the steak sliced, or stroganoff, or stir fry.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2021 14:12

Steak, rocket salad, baguette. Disc of blue cheese butter or garlic butter if I'm spoiling myself and a huge glass of red wine

Mominatrix · 16/07/2021 05:59

Cut it up and serve it in a Thai style, www.recipetineats.com/thai-beef-salad-2/.

I like it with grain salad (eg, pearled spelt or quinoa ) and grilled summer veg.

TheHoneyFactory · 17/07/2021 05:17

i just do a quick pan pepper gravy and eat mine with steamed green beans (i low carb) & some grilled zucchini and add a medium baked potato (not a meal sized one!) or sweet potato mash to husbands and kids.
we are a very meat +2/3 veg family, have simple steak meals weekly.

BasinHaircut · 17/07/2021 07:48

Thanks all! Lots of suggestions there.

For me I would love the mushrooms and onions in the steak pan whilst the meat is resting, and finish off with a splash of water and a dollop of cream cheese (thanks for whoever suggested that), but unfortunately neither my DH or DS will bloody eat that which is super annoying. I don’t want to be cooking 2 meals.

I still can’t decide what do do!

Crushed garlic and parsley new potatoes

Sweet potato wedges

Chimichurri sauce

Brazilianut · 18/07/2021 21:47

Oh and wilted spinach or creamed spinach

MadameMinimes · 18/07/2021 21:56

Tacos. Proper soft ones, not the weird crunchy things they sell in the supermarkets. I like the smaller, soft flour tortillas.

Thinly sliced cooked steak, add a chimichurri sauce and some home-pickled red onions. I’d probably have something green in there too… maybe a bit of avocado.

Or Korean style tacos. Bulgogi sauce, home-pickled cucumber, sesame mayonnaise.
