Number Cake - with pics

This was a dry run for a big birthday, any tips on how to improve? I'm delighted with the trial, but would anything lift it? More flowers, gold leaf? There is a '0' to join it!

The base layer didn't rise as well as top layer but that's because I was experimenting with flour (can recommend Waitrose sponge flour).

Should I try to do a duo/mixed icing for middle and top icings? The yellow and white?

Lastly, how would you present? This is all new to me but I think I'd prefer a huge wooden board to metallic cake boards but will it matter? And where would you pout the candles?

I cant see the picture? The mention of gold leaf and flowers has intrigued me though!

Pic should be there now!

Oh crossed post. I think a wooden board to present would make it look very country living, which I like. I think I would add some gold leaf, but otherwise its lovely. Well done!

goldpendant · 07/07/2021 23:14

Thank you! I think I've got the flower placement a little wrong but I can fix that on the day, I've got edible gold leaf ready to roll too.

If I were being really fussy, Id suggest taking a few topping decorations at the corner section. It looks a little cluttered there compared to the lower leg of the 7, and I think I prefer seeing through to the beautifully piped icing!

MeadowLines · 07/07/2021 23:16

Another crossed post!

😂 I was going to comment that it didn't look very hip for a 7 yo child

It looks absolutely amazing!!!! I don't think it needs any extras, it's amazing as is

goldpendant · 07/07/2021 23:18

You're right, and again I was playing with the full vs less cluttered look. I actually prefer the top, but think if the whole thing wet done that way it might be too much.

When I do the '0' too I'll take it a bit slower and not throw as much at it. I'll pipe the outside first then make some decisions about flower placement etc.

Thanks so much.

Looks amazing. I actually prefer the top too

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/07/2021 23:20

Looks fab op. Are the flowers bought or from your (or someone you know) garden? I wouldn't use bought flowers into anything I'm planning on eating. They spray them with all sorts of crap.

I can't make out any gold leaf on it.

I think I'd go all yellow for the flowers or else do the icing on top in white and have white and yellow flowers.

I want cake now.

Cakeandslippers · 07/07/2021 23:20

Looks great well done!

Only thing I'd do differently is to avoid the flowers hanging over the edges. I think it might be my personal preference but with these number cakes I think they look neater if the things on top are fully on top but it's not a big issue, still looks great as it is.

I'd agree that it'd look good presented on a wooden board. If you did decide to use a cake drum I think you'd need to cover it with fondant as the silver wouldn't look great with these colours. And yes gold leaf would really set this off! Bravo!

goldpendant · 07/07/2021 23:22

Thanks everyone so helpful.

There's no gold leaf as yet but I too think it would be the finishing touches, on the macarons perhaps.

I was thinking of adding some more green flowers instead of white, or some sprigs of foliage but might be too much again! I'm
A bit of a more is more kinda gal and probably need reining in!!

Its a fab job!!! I agree with others, that the top is cluttered with too many large, chunky decorations. I'd keep them smaller and less. That way, you don't detract from the number aspect- which is the main point. I'd also making the piping finer and smaller.

If anything, you could add much smaller, bud flowers around the edges of the cakes or board. The macrons and phsyalis is overkill. If they have special meaning, I'd put them on the board and not on the the cake. I'd keep the extra bits on board, and make the actual numbers and cake the star.

goldpendant · 08/07/2021 00:18

Thanks @Eleoura I don't want to go too much finer on the decorations as for me the beauty is in the big chunk easiness of it.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback - so helpful xx

It looks lovely OP - really impressive. The only thing that doesn't quite work for me is the colours- the icing, macarons and flowers are all too similarly yellowish. Agree with a PP- think white icing for the piping would look cleaner.

It looks amazing! I'd love to see the finished cake if you feel comfortable to post a picture. No useful tips as my cake decorating skills never progressed beyond pressing Smarties into chocolate fudge icing.

Amdone123 · 12/07/2021 10:01

It looks amazing. I agree with a wooden board.
You're very talented. I can't bake for love nor money. I was going to teach myself during Lockdown but decided I had too many vices as it is !
