Weve got a table booked for next Friday to watch the game in the pub. A mixed group of 6 middle aged friends, who for some sad reasons have been an absolute godsend to me over the last 12 months.

I was thinking of inviting them to eat here beforehand. I'd like to do something nice and substantial to soak up the beer, without spending hours in the kitchen. Something very informal but still nice.

No vegetarians or allergies, but one very fussy eater and two real foodies.

So I was planning to do a bit of variety in the hope of finding something fussy pants will eat.

So far I have a Nicoise salad, bread and cheese, a big bowl of strawberries and possibly bake a cake.

I feel like it needs at least one more. No problem if there are leftovers, it will mean I don't need to cook all weekend Smile I did think sausage rolls but not sure if they really "go". Or pork pies? Coleslaw?

Maybe something like pulled pork or a ham for sandwiches? Feels a bit more summery than sausages.

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 14/06/2021 13:20

Pulled pork with burger buns or ribs maybe?

A quiche or puff pastry tart.
Tomato, mozzarella, red onion and basil with balsamic.
Lemon and herb chicken mini fillets
Maybe some cold meats
Potato salad

Tacos, burritos, nachos or spanakopita. (Yes, I know. One of those things is not like the others.)

What about a really yummy potato and spinach frittata? Super easy to make and great for soaking up, but cold so nice and summery.
Plus you can make it beforehand and keep in the fridge! Super easy to make.

Something carb-heavy to line the stomach before beers, maybe?

PP suggested pulled pork - it’s is a doddle in a slow cooker and would a great pre-beer food. (Pulled jackfruit works for anyone not able to eat pork)
This recipe is good:

Fish cake tacos/burritos are fantastic too and much easier than you’d think. Whiz Amy white fish with an egg, zest of 2 limes, fresh coriander, a chilli and a garlic clove. Make into small blobs abd chill for at least 30 minutes (or day before) . They will lose a lot of liquid, don’t worry about it.
Fry for 3 minutes each side and serve with tacos/wraps, guacamole, shredded lettuce and a quick red onion pickle

Red onion pickle - finely slice one red onion. Put in a bowl with 1-2tsp salt and 3 tbs lime juice. Rest for at least 20 minutes. Keeps several days in the fridge.

Or serve either pork/fish with black beans and rice in a pressure cooker. Also dead easy.

Chicken drumsticks with assorted marinades / coatings

Scones, jam and cream - very carby and filling, very easy to make or just buy really good scones.

Iced coffee / assorted teas etc
