White cabbage in vegetable curry?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 18/05/2021 14:21

We have acquired a load of veg from neighbours who have gone on holiday, including a white cabbage.
I was thinking of making a veg curry, but wasn't sure how cabbage would work in that (with carrots, onions. green beans and courgettes).
I bought a huge cabbage last week so we had coleslaw or cooked cabbage with a few meals last week so don't want to repeat. Am undecided whether it will work in a mixed veg curry. Anyone done this? Thanks

There are recipes for curried cabbage, so it must be a thing. Instinctively, I'd say it would be horrible, but I thought that about curried cauliflower until I tried it.

Thanks @SaskiaRembrandt . I've served curried cabbage as a side dish before and have enjoyed it. So I know it 'works' with the curry flavour, just not sure whether it would add to or spoil the other mix of veg. Maybe I just give it a go and see!

My usual takeaway veg curry has white cabbage, it’s perfectly nice. I’d probably omit the courgettes though as they don’t seem to fit in with the other veg.

I wouldn’t put it in a curry itself but stir fried as it were with spices is nice as a side dish

Yes I can see all your points! I decided to google 'cabbage and courgette curry' and a few recipes came up. I'm thinking I'll give it a go. Worst case I've got pizza in the freezer!

It’s nice in curry. You often get cabbage in the veg curry that comes with a biriyani and it works well.

Cabbage works fine Indian style but would usually be a dry dish rather than a ‘wet’ saucy curry. Something like this:

There's a delicious Gujarati dish called Patra or Aloo Vadi (the aloo in this case doesn't refer to potato)

I buy it weekly from a local street food stalk but have looked into how I can make it myself. An alternative to the leaf that's used is kale but I don't see why you can't try it with white cabbage.

Thank you all, particularly for the links to some lovely sounding recipes.

Well the cabbage went in the curry, and it worked really well with all the other veg and no-one complained!
