Why is oxtail so expensive?

I honestly thought it would be like offal - cheap. But just bought frozen ox tail from our local and very good butcher and it was £££.

I haven't previously bought it for years.

It's £10.99 per kg at our local, very fancy butcher, I just had a look out of interest but that's including the bones, so probably only about 500g meat.

Liver is £10.99 per kg but that's al edible so better value.

I think it is an economy of scale thing, it is not popular which pushes the price up.

The only supermarket near me which stocks it is Morrisons.

Lots of goods which were cheap have become fashionable/known for being tasty and are more expensive than they used to be compared with prime cuts.

When I buy it, its cheap. I feel like a generous amount for a stew that woukd feed at least 6 people is well under a tenner.

I tend to use a couple of pieces for extra flavour and texture in a soup or stew, rather than to provide all the meat in the dish. So even if it has become more expensive, it will still be value for money when combined with a cheap cut like ox cheek.

I think this has a lot to do with it.

I remember my D Grandmother telling me that oysters used to be a "poor man's food". Not any longer.
