English Asparagus

Anyone in horticulture know when English (or indeed from anywhere in the UK) Asparagus will be available in shops? I know some Waitrose stores have limited supplies, but it's very expensive.

I can't say from POV of suppliers, but my rule of thumb is that asparagus comes into season in May and strawberries in June (we have them to celebrate family birthdays!)

Early asparagus may well come from the Channel Islands, and it is beginning to appear

They have reasonably priced bundles of it in markses. Had some, roasted, with garlic, last night.

It's usually May and the start of June. April would be early.

Its available locally to me in the proper farm shops. Not sure they have enough yet for the supermarkets. St Georges day is the official start of the asparagus season

I do remember buying in late April last year in Sainsbury's, so I assume it's to do with the weather, hence my question.

mine has started to grow, but has been decimated by the frost each time. so my guess is that as soon as these sharp overnight frosts stop it will start coming into shops.

Late April / early May. It is expensive but I LOVE it!

St George's Day on the 23rd of April is the official start of the English asparagus season. However, it's entirely weather dependent how much there will actually be available then. We've had a cold spring so I imagine it will be scarce and expensive for a few more weeks.

We got some from Sainsbury's last week, it was nice.

Had some a fortnight ago, locally grown, which I bought from a greengrocer in Pershore. Absolutely delicious!

I thought that, so hadn’t even started looking yet! Looking forward to getting some though.

Got some from Ocado last week. Lovely. As usual, I was then taken by surprise by the characteristic whiff on my next visit to the loo! (TMI)

I’m in Ireland, but we’ve been eating locally-grown asparagus here for a month already.

Got some from my local farm shop yesterday - Kent. Delicious Smile

I'm pretty sure the Asparagus I bought from Tesco last week was British. Will try to remember to double check when i go this week and report back

Ifailed · 27/04/2021 18:02

On the bright side, Sainsbury's had Jersey royals in on Sunday. So one step away from my favourite meal at this time of year, new potatoes, asparagus and lamb. Followed by rhubarb crumble, obviously.

I only buy asparagus when I know it's British. My annual spring treat.

I'm in spitting distance of Evesham & it's been creeping in to farm shops over the last week or so it's the best 'gras in the U.K. Wink

I bought some Wye valley today but it was £6 for about 10 spears. It's only a few weeks a year so I paid it. Waitrose from next week I'd say.
