Cutting out shortbreads

I want to have a go at this recipe but am a bit nervous of cutting out the shortbread circles once it’s been baked as:

  • I don’t have the right sized cutter so would be improvising with a glass
  • I’m worried it’ll crack if I try to cut the shortbread once it’s been baked.

Anyone know if it’ll be a disaster?

A glass won't be as sharp or accurate as a cutter would be, already baked before cutting out it will probably crumble or break unevenly around the edges.

That was my worry. Do you think if I cut it out before it’s baked, it’ll be the better option?

Or I could cut it out with a knife post baking!

They won't be as perfectly neat as the photo in the recipe if cut out beforehand but better than doing it with a glass after. Cutting circles with a knife would work but again won't be as perfect on the edges as a cutter would do it.

I roll into a log in cling film, put in fridge for 30mins then slice into rounds with a very sharp knife then bake

I cut them out with a glass before hand and then baked but they spread a bit during baking so I recut with a glass/knife combo and surprisingly it worked well!

Thanks for all the advice, am impatiently waiting for it all to set so I can inhale them all

I thought this was going to be a thread about someone who was addicted to shortbread and needed help cutting them out of their diet.

me too! I was thinking that cutting out shortbread by itself probably wouldn't do that much unless you also cut out all the other kinds of biscuits...

Haha doesn’t the “no s diet” stand for the “no shortbread diet”? Grin

This is how it turned out in the end. In retrospect I made the shortbread too thin as I didn’t think there’d be that much caramel and all the extra shortbread biscuits should’ve given it away but they’re delicious and I’m happy with how they came out!
