Does suet go off? I've got some with a best before 2011 and another pack with best before 2014

Any thoughts based on experience rather than just "gross it's past its best before date".

As it's best before rather than use by do you think it will be ok. It's for dumplings.

Thanks

Yes. It's fat. It'll be rancid

Defiantly41 · 18/03/2021 20:30

As in yes it's off, not yes, use it

BarryTheChopper · 18/03/2021 20:31

It definitely goes off, chuck it.

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2021 20:31

Yes. Not sure how long it takes, but in 2007 DM made a Christmas pudding with suet in a box with the price in shillings. It was very off!

Timeforabiscuit · 18/03/2021 20:32

I would say smell it, rancid fat is just that- rancid.

Although I'm of the "scrape it off the top" persuasion - 6 years past date on an animal product, is a bit close to the line for my liking.

ColdCottage · 18/03/2021 20:33

@BikeRunSki that was probably a wee bit older then 🤣

I'm pretty cavalier about sell-by dates and am also a "just cut the mouldy bit off" ....... but I'd say you're even more optimistic than I am about extensions to useful life!!

That said, I'm sure I saw a food programme about canning where they opened a 1970s tin of beans or similar and ate it......and it was fine.

BikeRunSki · 18/03/2021 20:38

@ColdCottage - just a bit! 🤣. DM is quite happy that she is not a good cook, but I’d say there’s a lot to be said for fresh ingredients.

Moltenpink · 18/03/2021 20:39

Yes sorry, I’ve tried it but it does get a stale taste.

ColdCottage · 18/03/2021 21:15

Thanks 😊
