Hi. My partner and I both hate cooking. I am crap at it. I'd really like to try some of the food boxes out where you get tge ingredients and the recipes. We are quite greedy so would want reasonable sized portions as well as healthy food!

Has anyone got any suggestions? Been looking at things like Gusto.

Any thoughts welcome, thank you.

My suggestion would be to try them all using the various special starting offers and then see which one you like best. Or just chop and change and buy different ones now and again.

I really like all of them to be honest.

Thanks StephenBelafonte 😊

The Riverford ones are nice for good everyday food. A good way to try things you might not normally consider.

Lots of tasty options

We tried Gusto recently and as we're a three we went for meals to serve 4 hoping we'd be able to do a left over night Grin

Portions were disappointing with no chance of a left over meal.

I also found, as someone who regularly cooks from scratch and fairly adventurous, flavours lacked depth, if that makes sense? So Fish Gyros for example I'd normally expect a rub and a bit of a marinade .., it was pan fried in an soy sauce based gloop and just a bit insipid. Of course we may have chosen badly!

Three out of four dishes I could have made better myself, no question. And without a shit tonne of plastic packaging to get rid of which, considering the demographic Gusto are appealing to, seems very wrong.

The fish florentine bake however was lovely and we have made it again since.

And we did get a lovely wooden spoon free gift 😁

We preferred gousto to hello fresh and find the portion sizes to either be generous or at least adequate - the pasta dishes are bigger than we would usually make. It’s not always the same but a meal for 2 could often do two adults plus a toddler.

DavidsSchitt · 19/02/2021 19:41

We like hello fresh for choice and pasta evangelists

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 19/02/2021 19:45

Been doing gousto for 18 months now. Love it. I get it weekly at the moment as it gives us something to do during lockdown when we get in from work. We even got free tonys chocolate from them last week. (The bars go for £3.50). They did forgot to put in a butternut squash once and immediately refunded us a 5r. Xx

We have tried Gousto, Hello fresh and simply cook. I like Gousto and hello fresh and found the portions very big. We could use a meal for 4 for my family of 5 (2 adults 3 teens). I like the fact that you get everything and you know what the pastes sauces are etc so you can keep the recipes and remake them. Simply cook you just get the spices/pastes a d have to buy everything else. Because they are mixed pastes it is hard to then recreate them and I have had to search things out to recreate (bokkenbap is amazing). We didn't keep any of them up ultimately as 2 of my kids can be fussy and so would have to make them different meals so it's not financially sensible.

Here's a code for a £1 simply cook box (you get 4 meals worth in it)
We absolutely love it, especially jambalaya, Nasi goreng, paella and lots more. Very good value.

Lots of really useful replies, thank you

Gousto is the preferred option in our house. Have never found the portions to be small and we certainly can't be accused of eating like birds. Meat portions can be quite small but there's normally another protein alongside it. (I've got a referral code of 50% off if you can't find one).

Hello Fresh is alright but the meals aren't as tasty. If you know anyone who uses it they might be able to send you a code for a free box. Otherwise there'll be discount codes knocking about.

Simply Cook we've only tried one meal from so far but it was tasty (you might be able to find a code for a free box, if not then codes for £1 boxes are common).

Haven't tried any of the other ones but they're generally a lot more expensive. I did see Morrison's are doing them as well now for a similar price to Gousto and hello fresh.

"We even got free tonys chocolate from them last week. (The bars go for £3.50)"

£2 at Sainsbury's Wink

StephenBelafonte · 22/02/2021 06:58

Didn't realise Morrisons did them. Have just placed an order. Prices look great - £3.50 per portion!

BlueCowWonders · 22/02/2021 07:13

We tried Hello Fresh but wouldn't recommend. There were far too many ingredients missing from the boxes, generally smaller things but annoying nevertheless.
It was ok to prompt me into a couple of new recipes to add to our regular rotation but an expensive way of doing it

minniemoocher · 22/02/2021 07:21

We have HelloFresh for 3 meals a week

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 22/02/2021 07:38

I found the Hello Fresh packaging incredibly wasteful and a couple of times the chicken had already gone off by the time we opened it.

We're doing Balance Box at the moment as we have zero free time and are trying to lose weight. Really impressed with the food quality and variety. It's expensive though. Good for a short term fix.

Trunkysbun · 22/02/2021 09:42

We've been doing Gousto for exactly a year ... and love it.

Chogg2020 · 22/02/2021 18:44

It’s not a daily meal box but I found this company The Pullum’s Delivered (www.thepullumsdelivered.com ) who make delicious restaurant quality food and deliver it to your door once a week if London based. We’ve ordered 3 times now and each time it’s been outstanding and reasonably priced. I can’t cook for toffee so DH was stunned when I produced the first meal Grin but it’s so easy - basically reheat in the oven. Would highly recommended

andannabegins · 22/02/2021 19:00

I have a code for a free simply cook box if anyone is interested. They just sent me an email to get another free box because I cancelled

feliznavidad2 · 22/02/2021 22:10

Also highly recommend Gousto, have a 50% off your first box code if anyone wants it (in the name of transparency, I would then also get money off my next box.) Smile

floofycroissant · 22/02/2021 22:31

Tried Gousto and Hello Fresh. Depends what you're looking for.

Hello Fresh - very simple instructions, each meal packed in a bag just pop in the fridge, recipes can be a bit samey, a lot of fish dishes are "premium", you'll never have to buy garlic again

Gousto - larger portions, a lot more diverse recipe choice, more faff - some recipes have needed blenders and pestle and mortar, everything comes in a large box so you have to dig through, had a few key ingredients missing, they give occasional freebie

I prefer Hello Fresh because it's easier.

Turnedouttoes · 25/02/2021 11:05

Would someone mind posting a Gousto code please?

Tootle10 · 25/02/2021 11:30

We love gousto and hello fresh here.

Hello fresh works well for us as they do an option of portions for 3 people, which generously serves our family of 2 adults, 5 year old and 1 year old. You can also choose 5 meals per week which means I have to do very little top up shopping. Meals are tasty, although more everyday meals I think, things I would cook anyway and limited fish options without paying a supplement.

I love the gousto meals, so many options, good quality ingredients and really tasty. But we have to get either portions for 2 (not enough) or for 4 (great for leftovers but can be wasteful if it’s not a meal that lends itself to left overs or more commonly we just overeat!)

Code for gousto - RACHA26754242

willowsway · 25/02/2021 11:37

We prefer Gousto to Hello Fresh. There's a promo code below if anyone wants to try it. I find the portions big and I like the freebies they throw in once in a while.
