Gifted at xmas, I opened a bottle of white truffle oil yesterday.

It smelled like a gas leak. Can this be normal?

Probably. It’s absolutely rank stuff, bleugh. Nasty. Yeuch...

GeidiPrimes · 16/02/2021 16:30

To me truffle oil smells just like garlic.

Georgyporky · 16/02/2021 18:03

It should be lovely - intense mushroomy smell & flavour.
I suggest you upend the bottled on your finger & taste it.
Do check the date; it lasts well beyond any Use By or BBE, but won't last forever.

Noooooo. Not lovely. Horrid. Smells like dirt to me... I can’t stand even fresh ones.

NutellaEllaElla · 16/02/2021 18:29

Hmm, it is an acquired taste and easily overpowering. It might not be off!

Shoutymomma · 16/02/2021 18:52

Well I love mushrooms and loved the truffle I once tasted. This smelt like the devils gusset.

Maybe the oil has gone a bit cacky?

Moodykat · 16/02/2021 19:02

We had truffle oil in a gousto meal the other day, DH said it tasted and smelled like gas. I thought it was delicious!

Maybe it’s like brussel sprouts. I tried some on DS when he was little and he still occasionally says how awful it was (my logic was giving him a taste of everything so he could decide for himself).

Truffle oil is the emperor's new clothes after he's been wearing them for a week and running 20k every day. Smells like mud and tastes like feet.

Ditto caviar, oysters, lobster... my parents used to try us on so many thinks as kids/teens and I’m not shy to say - bleugh!

Thunderpunt · 16/02/2021 19:15

Delicious (assuming it's not gone cacky) Do a mushroom risotto and add a tiny drizzle in at the end before topping with fresh Parmesan....

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 16/02/2021 19:17

Don’t do it! It’s the devils spit! It will ruin your whole meal!

MirandaMarple · 17/02/2021 22:04

Use in extremely small quantities. My favourite lunch is cold pasta with a slow cooked, very garlicky tomato sauce, loads of fresh basil and black pepper and a tiny drizzle of truffle oil.

SpudsandGravy · 18/02/2021 22:40

I had exactly the same experience! The smell was so disgusting that I had to throw it out. Have wondered ever since whether it was supposed to smell like that!

CorianderBee · 19/02/2021 13:00

God I hate truffle... ruins everything
