Mash potato help, please!

We had boiled potatoes as part of tea yesterday. I fully intended to mash the left overs for tonight and forgot. Unusually helpful DC put the dish in the fridge, lol! Can I mash them cold using a potato ricer add some milk and butter and reheat in the oven while the rest of the food is cooking? Or would they taste rank? Thanks in advance x

I would! though I would more likely slice and fry!

SpamIAm · 15/02/2021 15:32

Can't see why it would taste any more rank than if your mashed them straight after boiling 🤷‍♀️

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 15/02/2021 15:33

I'd roast them.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/02/2021 15:35

I’d microwave to reheat mash, it will dry out in the oven.

I use leftover roast potatoes (and parsnips) as a mash topping for lamb pie (try it, it’s delicious). Anyway, the way that works best is if I put the potatoes in a big pan (you want a thin layer of potatoes, not piled high) with enough milk to cover the bottom about a cm deep, put the lid on, leave on a low heat for about 10 mins, then mash.

This is such an odd post. It's one where you think everyone does the same thing and realise they actually don't! Why would they taste bad? I'd just microwave them and mash them.

TierFourTears · 15/02/2021 15:49

I'd mash them, add loads of cheese, butter and milk, and cook in the oven for cheesy mash.
You will get a crust if you heat in the oven (but I quite like it like that- especially cheesy mash!)

Thanks for your comments :-) As @Okokokbear says, it is an odd post! Usually I would roast them but I 'pinky promised' mash and I don't want to go out just for more spuds!

What you suggest sounds fine, although YABU saying mash potato instead of mashed potato

Lunaballoon · 15/02/2021 16:45

I don’t think mashing cold potatoes would give you the right consistency. Mashed potatoes need to be made straight after draining and steam drying so they absorb the milk and butter prior to mashing.

I’d fry your leftover potatoes if I were you.
