Dh has a big birthday coming up. We’d usually go to a special restaurant for lunch or have done a tasting menu. What can I make that feels fun and ‘fancy’ to celebrate his special day. I’m a confident cook and can tackle most things but I want to make something wow. What would you do in this situation?

Truffle macaroni cheese - there are loads of recipes for this online. This one is quite easy and serves two www.gousto.co.uk/cookbook/vegetarian-recipes/easy-truffle-mac-n-cheese Nigella’s recipe for crab mac n cheese is even more luxurious!

Any definite no’s? I’d probably go for seafood or fish.

ceeveebee · 06/02/2021 13:40

We are having a 5 course tasting menu tonight from a local restaurant (lots of fancy restaurants doing this, they deliver a box of food with minimal cooking required, most delivery nationally).
I can link you to a useful thread on this if you would like?

ceeveebee · 06/02/2021 13:41

(I should say it’s for my birthday, we don’t just do this on a random Saturday!)

Extrapepperoni · 06/02/2021 13:44

Check out onefinedine.com - they're a catering company for private jets and basically provide Michelin starred meals for the rich and famous but during lockdown given no one is flying, have pivoted to home delivery. Everything comes ready to heat and there are plating instructions for an amazing looking meal. We did it for a birthday celebration last month and will definitely do it again. Got dressed up any everything, felt almost like going out to a meal sans the travel and exorbitant bottle of wine!!

DH has a big birthday coming up too and I've arranged for a restaurant to deliver a load of seafood.

Passthewinebottle · 06/02/2021 13:51

A couple of our most favourite local restaurants are doing amazing Valentine's Day menus for collection/delivery, but they're quite steep, so, as I love cooking I'm going to pick the best three courses & make my own! ❤️

Passthewinebottle · 06/02/2021 14:05

Thinking about it, for a big birthday, we'd definitely splash out & @Extrapepperoni'S suggestion of Onefinedine looks unreal 😍😍😍

LucyLatimer · 06/02/2021 17:30

Some great ideas thanks. I hadn’t thought of ordering in. A tasting menu could be great if I can find one, any suggestions? No definite no’s for food. Lovely rEcipes, I will have a look through but definitely the sort of thing I was looking for. Love seafood too

A different price range but still extremely good is Cote At Home. Loads of lovely choices, great quality food and arrives by courier well packaged and chilled. I got this for DH's big birthday and he loved it.

If you'd like a seafood link this is where I've ordered from:

I am a little nervous about shucking our own oysters though 🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/02/2021 18:32

@ScandiCandy - just make sure you've got the proper oyster knife and a thick teatowel to hold them and stop slippage. There are videos on YouTube, but it's pretty straightforward..
