Dumplings: do I need mash as well?

This is going to sound like a really daft question but am making a stew with dumplings. I have never made dumplings before and they’re not something we had growing up. Do I need to do mash as well, or are the dumplings the standalone carb?

Some will say you can have mash with everything, including mash.
If you are making regular size dumplings, I reckon they are the equivalent to a good scoop of mash, so work out how many scoops of mash you'd normally do. You may find there's not enough room in the strew pot for all the dumplings - so maybe will need some mash as well?

We had stew with dumplings last night and I didn't bother with potatoes. It depends on how many dumplings you make and how hungry/ active you are. Also, what's in the stew? We had lentils and chestnuts as well as other veg so it was filling.

I use about one and half ounces flour per person.

I like both, but I am a very greedy person.

Mash as well.

Dumplings are just a bonus carb!

Thank you all! It is a chicken paprika recipe and I’m not convinced I want mash as well but DH will.

My 12 year old son would say 100% yes, so I do both but if it weren't for his insatiable appetite and love of comfort food I'd probably not do both.

Mash is lovely with the sauce from a stew 😉

I would have both, but then I'll a bit of a carb fiend !
