Bread machine - getting wholemeal loaf to rise

I am asking this for someone who doesn't hang out here so don't have all the particulars.

They use a breadmaker and make both white and brown loaves. Apparently, the brown loaf doesn't rise as much. They are using wholemeal strong bread flour.

Does anyone have any tips for a better rise?

She’ll need to add a bread rise improver to help with the rise at the set times which machines use - vitamin c and dried milk powder are the most common ones.

They might need to use more water. They should look for a recipe specifically for brown bread to get the proportions right. And obv use the brown bread setting, assuming they have one. And yes, a ground up vitamin C tablet in the water.

Yes to checking she is using a recipe specifically for wholemeal.

When I first got my bread maker the loaves didn't seem to rise much. Eventually I switched yeast brands and boy did it make a difference! May be worth contacting the breadmaker manufacturer to see which yeast they recommend, they certainly would have tested a few.
