Unicorn cake - help!

Help! DSD wants a unicorn cake for her birthday. My Dad offered to make it but now we are on lockdown he won't be able to bring it over. I can bake a standard sponge cake but how on earth do I make it into a unicorn? I can't do fancy cakes and everything I've found on google looks really complicated.

Make a large round cake (for it's face), ice it then add eyes colourful icing as hair, and an ice cream cone for the horn. (Hopefully someone else can add more artistic ideas - I've never made one!)

Ice it up with buttercream. Put multicoloured sprinkles around the edges and stand a plastic model unicorn on top, surrounded by sugar flowers

I made a rectangular cake and iced it, and then filled a lamb shaped cake pan with chocolate crispy mix. Covered it in icing and added hair and a horn. Et voila !

Buy one from a supermarket...

There are lots of recipes online. Personally i can bake, but my decorations are always interesting. Using plastic models is one of my tricks (Playmobil unicorns are quite nice).

M&S do a unicorn cake with rainbow insides

LittleMissLockdown · 31/12/2020 14:19

Almost every supermarket will have Unicorn cakes. I would honestly just buy her one. It will be less stressful and cheaper than making it.

I bought the accessories on Amazon - stick on eyelashes, ears, horn etc. Made it much easier.
For the icing, I just buttercreamed the whole cake and then made lots of different colours and piped little swirls all over the top in a random pattern and down the sides for the mane.
I made a rainbow sponge for the middle and cut a hole down the centre which I filled with pink smarties before icing. Good luck. X

Loads of recipes and step by step guides on how to decorate and ice on YouTube.

Asda and Tesco do lovely ones very cheap

starsinyourpies · 31/12/2020 15:26

Yep accessories set from Amazon and pipe the mane, I did it and it looked surprisingly professional!

Or most supermarkets do them.

Ifonlyicouldliveinmypjs · 31/12/2020 15:55

The supermarket ones don’t taste anywhere near as good as home made though. I bought the Tesco one last year and it was horrible - the icing was really synthetic tasting and sickly sweet. We threw most of it in the bin.

CC2021 · 31/12/2020 16:41

Thank you for all the suggestions. I definitely want to make it as the supermarket ones don't taste as nice. Tbh she would be happy with any cake but since she asked my Dad for a unicorn, I'd like to at least try.

I made one like Ifonlyicouldliveinmypjs. Several standard sponges, stacked and buttercreamed. I bought pastel coloured fondant and forced it through the garlic press to make hair. I made fondant ears and attached them with toothpicks. I used the same fondant, twirled around a chopstick, to make the horn. I bought chocolate writing icing to do the eyes/eyelashes.

Wow that looks fab @leafinthewind! Garlic press is such a clever idea, do you just put a load in and press it through?

leafinthewind · 01/01/2021 17:17

Yep! I didn't push it all the way down before adding more - that way you get longer strands. A friend gave me this tip, and now I pass it on!

TimeToCloseTheDoor · 01/01/2021 17:23

I’m just here to look at all the fab home made cakes. Ignore me

Home bargains sell a silicone mold.

I used it for my DD

SlipperyLizard · 01/01/2021 17:36

Here’s mine - bought the horn and ears off amazon, then piped the mane with 3 colours in the piping bag and a 2D piping tip. The right piping tip really does make it easy (I’m not very artistic).
