Pie dish too deep?

I’ve made some chicken and mushroom pie. It doesn’t fill my pie dish as much as I thought it would.

I’ll be putting puff pastry on top.

Does it matter?? Or should I use a smaller dish?

I cut the pastry to size, & cook it separately on a baking sheet.

I learnt this from my local pub; an inexperienced waiter brought my pie without the lid, swiftly followed by the chef bringing it !

Yes, bake your circle of puff pastry separately and pop on top before you serve. The pastry stays crisper that way too.
