How much food and when to increase amounts?

Help! I've been weaning my 23 week old for a week now and have no idea whether I'm giving enough/too much food - one teaspoon or so of baby rice mixed with a bit of milk once a day for a week, then I added a spoonful of carrot today - or when to increase the amount. My feeling is that she would eat as much as I give her, which can't be right. Any ideas? Am currently giving the solids before a b/f. HV says I should go on my "gut instinct", which I find spectacularly unhelpful.

When you say weaning, do you just mean adding solids?

23 weeks is still pretty young, given that they don't recommend adding any solids until 6 months. Why not just stick with the rice for now? Why are you in a hurry?

Sorry - yes, I mean just adding solids. Not in a hurry really, just can't remember what I did last time round (when advice was to start at 3 months!), and she does seem ready to eat.

I would just stick with rice if I was you.

Thanks for comments - as I've started to move to solids I will continue so would still appreciate any hints about when/if to increase amounts without reducing milk supply for at least the next month or so.

I have the contented weaning book and have found it helpful as it details exactly how much to give and of what.
I weaned dd to solids at 19 weeks due to a increase in appetite. For 3 days we just gave 1 teaspoon of baby rice at 11am, then I moved the rice to 6pm and gave 1 cube of carrot at 11am for 3 days and so on. I introduce a new food every 3 days while gradually increasing the amount.
At 21 weeks old and 3 weeks of weaning our day is now for example.
7am milk
11am milk followed by 1 cube sweet pot, 1 cube corguette,
2.30pm Milk
6.00 Milk followed by 3 teaspoons rice and 1 cube pear/apple.
10.30 milk

I have just homecooked loads of fruit and veg and will only give her these until she reaches 6 months. Once at 6 months I will start breakfast and more substantial meals ie pasta/meat

Thanks Kbaby, that's really helpful and it's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one to start solids before 6 months! I might get the GF book after all...
