Steak, Mac 'n' Cheese & what?!

CoffeeAndWinePlease · 11/12/2020 13:30

This is my first thread so hopefully doing this right.

DP has text today saying he really fancies Steak & Mac 'n' Cheese for dinner tonight but I'm stuck in what to serve it with!

Toying between a green salad (worried it might be a bit boring) or griddled asparagus/tenders to.

I adore cooking but am having a complete blank and on a healthier accompaniment.

Has anyone got a blinding idea I haven't even thought of?

Green beans for me....or asparagus as you've already suggested

EnPoinsettia · 11/12/2020 16:32

Asparagus, garlic mushrooms and oven roast cherry tomatoes with a balsamic glaze

TheGriffle · 11/12/2020 16:34

Garlic mushrooms and tender stem broccoli.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2020 16:35

I had steak and mac-n-cheese last time I went to a steakhouse. I had it with a rocket, parmesan and cherry tomato salad (coated in oil and salt) was delicious.

Nacreous · 11/12/2020 16:35

What about roasting green beans with garlic and adding toasted pine nuts and (optional) balsamic vinegar? This is a yummy option if you have the stuff.

VienneseWhirligig · 11/12/2020 16:39

I always do mushrooms and onions with steak, cooked in the juices of the steak as it's resting. Asparagus or tenderstem broccoli could work.

BillywigSting · 11/12/2020 16:40

Grilled corn on the cob

Green beans sautéed with garlic

Literally any greens sautéed with garlic - asparagus, broccoli, leafy greens. All delicious

Roasted cherry tomatoes on the vine

Grilled portobello mushroom

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 11/12/2020 16:41

I couldn't eat both of those together! I'd have it with a lovely tomato salad and fries, or garlic mushrooms, maybe potato gratin.

I can't get on board with mac and cheese as a side. It's too filling. Cauliflower cheese maybe?

JanetPudding · 11/12/2020 16:42

Onion rings. Yum.

MeringueCloud · 11/12/2020 16:42

Is that macaroni cheese? Or a McDonald's dish?

Dreamymcdreamer · 11/12/2020 16:42

I was going to say potato skins at first but then realised you said you wanted a healthier side 😂

I like it in restaurants where you get tender stem broccoli with chili flakes and shaved parmesan

PurpleDaisies · 11/12/2020 16:43

Garlic bread Grin

For a healthier option, chargrilled tenderstem broccoli

lakesideadvent · 11/12/2020 17:37

I'd go with charred tender stem broccoli.

CoffeeAndWinePlease · 11/12/2020 18:05

Thank you all so much. These all sound like great ideas.

DontWalkPastTheCastle - I'm not overly keen on the steak and macaroni cheese together either but DP very rarely requests anything so feel like I should oblige. I will be sticking to macaroni cheese only.

All these suggestions sound delicious and I have a fair amount already in. Looking like tenderstem and green beans made more exciting is the way to go.

Ooooh. Just realised I have all of these in.

My first thought was asparagus but grilled tomatoes would go nicely too.

SquishyFishy · 11/12/2020 18:10

Definitely rocket salad - something fresh and punchy to cut through the richness 😃

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 11/12/2020 18:48

Green beans, asparagus and/ or broccoli roasted in garlic and butter.

Roasted or grilled tomatoes.

Buttered corn on the cob.

Garlic mushrooms.

Peas.

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 11/12/2020 18:49

Rocket salad sounds amazing though

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 11/12/2020 18:51

Any kind of greens flash fried in the steak pan with a bit of lemon juice & salt

TinkersRucksack · 11/12/2020 18:56

Am I the only one thinking chips with cheese and jalapeños on top?

You're all way too healthy Grin

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 11/12/2020 19:12

@TinkersRucksack

Ooh yes dirty fries topped with cheese, spring onions and sour cream

Potato skins with cheese and chives or cheese and bacon bits

Twice baked cheesy potato

Tater tots, mini hash browns or potato croquettes.

Sweet corn fritters.

Onion rings (the battered king).

Breaded mushrooms.

CoffeeAndWinePlease · 11/12/2020 19:50

@TinkersRucksack

I'm only saying healthy sides as I'm definitely knocking back a bottle of red alongside.

If anyone is actually interested, I have gone for;

Sirloin Steak with smoked garlic & caramelised onion butter - DP
Jacket Potato - DP (again, requested so couldn't say no)
Marmite Mac 'n' Cheese - both (don't knock it until you've tried it)
Garlic Bread - Me (@PurpleDaisies I blame you)
Griddled Asparagus & Green beans tossed with olive oil, smoked sea salt, garlic & lemon. - Both

OP posts:
AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 11/12/2020 20:43

Ooh yum. Sounds very nice. Marmite is perfect in Mac N Cheese
