Spekulatius // German Christmas biscuit

Hello, I've lived here for 10 years but wanted to check if someone knows if there's a place you can buy Spekulatius. I don't even know if there's an English word for it, it's a spiced Christmas biscuit, quite thin and usually has a rectangle shape. I'm preggers and CRAVING it, could also be craving it if I wasn't pregnant. Usually we go over for the Christmas markets and I bring them back home (this is now home) but this is not happening now.

I think they might be the biscoff biscuits?

Nemesia · 30/11/2020 17:43

Lidl usually have them.

stodgystollen · 30/11/2020 17:45

It might not be acceptable, but HEMA will sell the Dutch version, speculaas. Otherwise, Lotus biscuits are close-ish to the Dutch version. Lidl sell tolerable Lebkuechen at this time of year, so they might also sell speculaas.

pastabest · 30/11/2020 17:45

Lotus biscoff biscuits?

Schar sell a gluten free version of Spekulatius at this time of year which is what will most likely come up if you look for them online at any of the supermarkets

frolicmum · 30/11/2020 17:45

@Oswin no they're not - sorry but thank you!

@Nemesia good shout!! Good old German Lidl! I never shop there but will be going there to hunt down the biscuits!

Think I saw them in lidl or aldi last week (went in both so not sure but I think it was aldi) and I think tesco had them as well as I was surprised.

Nemesia · 30/11/2020 17:47

I tried to post a picture but 🤷‍♀️. They are called spiced biscuits and are in a white bag with red and gold on it.

Thecatisboss · 30/11/2020 17:48

Definitely tesco!

Sainsbury's sell some too!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/11/2020 17:51

You can get them in Poundland (Coppenrath und Wiese)

frolicmum · 30/11/2020 17:59

@TheYearOfSmallThings love that! They're classed as the posh ones in Germany (or at least when I still lived there)

Well they're widely available here in classy outlets such as Poundland, Sam 99p stores (many varieties), and farmfoods (for the frozen cakes and strudel).

I'm a fan of the streusel cakes.

frolicmum · 30/11/2020 21:04

@TheYearOfSmallThings I love a good streusel, fresh streusel cake from the bakery is lovely! God this almost makes me feel home sick especially after the year we've had.

OP you can even make your own! There is a speculaas recipe on the BBC food website, that says 30 mins preparation time.
