best ready rolled puff pastry

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 30/11/2020 17:16

It's sausage roll time of year. I only make them at Christmas Smile

I've gone to add ready rolled puff pastry to my Sainsbury's order and the reviews on the Sainsbury's own pastry and on the Jusrol pastry are awful.

I'm lucky enough to have a plethora of supermarkets around here; any suggestions please for the best ready rolled pastry or should I get of my back side and make my own?

I always buy Tesco's own and it's been fine. It's probably made by Jusrol anyway (which I've also used and never had a problem with, just Tesco's own is slightly cheaper)

I use the blocks of puff pastry the jusrol ones and Tesco, I just roll out to the size I need.

I always use Bells puff pastry

I've always had Jusrol or Sainsbury's own all-butter chilled and the recent reviews are unfortunately right - absolutely vile and glue-like. Check ingredients, as it seems that a lot have removed butter and replaced with palm oil. Great if you need vegan / dairy free and have no choice, but tastes unpleasant and with dubious environmental impact. I'd make my own rough-puff if I was you.

thanks for the replies. I've never made pastry before Hmm

Tesco Finest all butter!

FlyingFlamingo · 30/11/2020 20:52

Tesco ready rolled has changed to be vegan so it’s made with margarine now, it’s rank Envy

I used the Sainsbury's one a few weeks ago and it was more like shortcrust than puff, it was bizarre.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference All Butter puff pastry is the one I use, and it's lovely. No palm oil or other oil here - just butter.

Waitrose Frozen.Only got flour, butter, water, salt in it. Palm oil is to be avoided for environmental and taste reasons.

I use the aldi chilled one, and my sausage rolls taste great

Another vote for Sainsburys Taste the Difference

The only shop bought puff pastry I have had good results with is Dorset - closest one to good home made.

Coldhandscoldheart · 02/12/2020 06:29

M&S doesn’t have palm oil & is quite nice. Can’t compare to home made as I’ve never made my own, I’ve been scared off by everyone saying how hard it is to do.

If so many people have problems with the ready rolled stuff being too sticky, just buy it in a block. It only has to be rolled out - not really difficult!

For me, there are two things that make the ready-rolled stuff easier to use - first it needs to be very cold when you're unrolling it, and second, sprinkle a little bit of plain flour as you're working with it. Oh, and third - be patient and do it gradually/gently!
