www.cooks.com/recipe/o69n928i/grandmas-old-fashioned-date-cake.html

Here's the recipe :

1 pkg. dates (cut in sm. pieces) or ready chopped
Soak in 1 cup boiling water until soft.
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tbsp. salt
1 apple, peeled and chopped fine
1/2 c. nuts
Bake in greased and floured tube pan at 325 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

I'm guessing I just mix it all together? Surely 1 tsp shortening is not enough? No idea what a tube pan is : loaf pan?

Mist cake recipes would follow this order -
Mix (fork) flour baking soda baking powder and salt in one bowl.
Mix all others (not dates and apple And nuts) In a separate bowl.
Stir in apple and date and nuts into wet bowl.

Slowly (bit by bit maybe quarter at a time) add dry to wet, stirring it in roughly. Don’t over mix.
Have you googled tube tin ? No idea what this is.
Good
Luck.

Tube pan looks to be either angel food or kuggelhoff pan - not a loaf pan - needs tube hole in middle.

Really oddly op it appeared once when I went to another recipe and back (forget the oil think that was another). Find another recipe for it with similar ingredients to check ?

there was a bit of a fad for cakes like this a while back...using dates/prune/apples in lieu of fat.

i'd do this like a muffin...all dry ingreds together, all wet ingreds together, add together do not over mix and into the oven with no hanging about.
