Marzipan recipe for someone who hates marzipan?

...that someone being me. I've made a couple of Christmas cakes and want to decorate them in the traditional way. The thing is I've never enjoyed marzipan on cakes, probably because I've only had the horrible day-glo yellow stuff that is readymade and uses almond flavouring.

Does anyone have a nice, easy marzipan recipe that isn't too almondy?

This isn't at all almond-y. I don't know what it tastes like though...

I've made the above recipe as we have someone with a nut allergy. It is really good, rolls well and doesn't taste of almonds.

This is not too almond-y, I'd say, but use one egg and no juice:

Nothing like shop bought!

I’ve made ‘marzipan’ with pistachio before, it comes out prettily green and has a nice flavour. Less sweet than almond marzipan.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm intrigued by the pistachio idea, I will do some googling.

Thank you so much, I have a nut allergy and never thought marzipan could be made nut-free!

@Littlepiggiesinblankets - I spotted a similar recipe on the GF website for vanilla marzipan, but the orange would work well with the cake recipe I used (also from the GF website) www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/simmer-stir-christmas-cake

@Knittedfairies, @Emeeno1 - good recipe that I'll keep in mind, although I don't mind ground almonds, I just don't like almond essence

Funnily, I made it with the simmer and stir cake! Although the cake was a bit crumbly ( my fault, didn't have enough alcohol) it was delicious!

This is the recipe that you need!

It has converted every marzipan-hating friend I know!

Delia smiths recipe is quite good. Just skip the almond essence out. Then it's a lovely mellow flavour and not that on your face, fake almond flavour of the shop bought stuff

A friend of mine makes hers with hazelnuts instead, for family members who don't like almonds.
