Rice maker anyone?

DS has asked for us to get a rice maker.

We have have polo-Paz’s in the past and I’m not sure if these are the same as sushi/sticky rice makers?

I have seen a small Lakeland maker - has anyone got this or something similar?

Posting as I'm really keen on getting a rice maker. We eat a lot of Indian food and a fair amount of sushi so I would love something reliable that does both long grain and short grain.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 20/09/2020 14:19

they often have long grain one-mode models really cheap in asda.

I bought one from Yum Asia at the beginning of lockdown, and it was my favourite panic purchase. It's got a 'low-carb' option on it, and can make porridge!

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 14:26

Ooooh what’s that? I’ve also seen one from Von Chef that looks good too. They are quite expensive so I down want to spend £30+ on a dud! I seem to remember someone telling my that a U.K. brand one was ok morphy Richards to tefal ?

My ‘proper’ ones were send over from the ME (so for cooking basmati) but I don’t know if I could make sticky rice (all non stick pans). They were pretty big so I gave them to my BiL!

Sorry the links don’t work!

We’ve got s microwave one and it works brilliantly. We hardly use it now we’re low carb but the best rice used to be basmati. Long grain just went to mush.

I use the microwave one for quinoa (I always boil it to mush) and long grain rice doesn’t come out very nice. Brown rice is terrible!

Yum Asia all the way - got mine at the beginning of lockdown and it is brilliant. Does all sorts of rise and has a great crust setting. We have this one rosegold. It was expensive but we use it three or four times a week so well worth it.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 14:32

We are rice snobs here (comes of being mostly from the ME I’m afraid) so if it’s not ‘proper’ Ba’ath cooked in the ‘proper’ way... riots will happen!

DS is just really into Asian food and loves Japanese/Chinese/Korean rice (well he goes to a Korean cafe near school for lunch when he can!)

Jamie - I would but it for the logo alone!

Ideally I need something dinky. I haven’t loads of room for more gadgets!

Ba’ath? I don’t even know that that is! Basmati...

We have the little lakeland one and love it, but I would not describe myself as a rice connisor.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 16:38

I’M BUYING THE LAKELAND ONE. IT DOES PORRIDGE!! I AM VERY EXCITED!!!

Ok then Grin

homemadecommunistrussia · 20/09/2020 16:45

I have only tried porridge in ours once and I thought it was a bit over done. I might experiment with chunkier oats or switching it off sooner...

Meredusoleil · 20/09/2020 16:47

Our Tefal one packed up after several years (12+) during lockdown and we needed to get hold of one urgently as we eat rice at least twice a week. Got a black Cookworks one FROM Argos and can't fault it so far (been about 5 months now).

Was planning on getting a Russell Hobbs one but the reviews were better for the Argos one 😉

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 16:53

The best porridge I ever had was made overnight in the Aga of b&b we stayed at. Bloody lovely (plus I think they put the top of the milk in it).

Op I am a brand new ‘rice snob’ (didn’t realise it was a thing). Was using up some lockdown (first lockdown) rice - some kind of organic white long grain. Really tasteless and hard to cook correctly.
Back to basmati for me - so tasty and pretty forgiving - don’t want a rice cooker stove top will do.

SerenityNowwwww · 20/09/2020 17:13

I just really wanted it for DS - he likes to cooks but usually it ends up in smoke alarms and a sink of dishes. I don’t trust him steaming it properly! At least with a baby polo-Paz he can pop it on, cook some veggies or an omelette and not cause a disaster in my kitchen!

Plus I love a new gadget!

We only eat basmati (white sometimes brown) and cook it like this (in fact this is what I’m making tonight - with tadhig) m.youtube.com/watch?v=wxXwjCkUD_Y

Getting hungry here !

SerenityNowwwww · 23/09/2020 13:59

Ok - got the Lakeland winky-dinky version (2 portions my backside) and DS has christened it and declared it really good. The rice came out (a little dry but) cooked through and fluffy.

He’s a happy bunny now. But he keeps making me bowls of rice!

There going to be a egg fried rice side dish tonight!
